2.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a dud...
Hot wheels can be a lot of fun, many of the sets providing interchangeable parts, ways to assemble components into different car crashing scenarios, connections to other sets, etc. This, however, provides none of that. It is a stand-alone piece that offers little fun, no potential for creativity, and my peanuts lost interest quickly.

I would not recommend...

I would not recommend this toy for a number of reasons:
1) Its not that fun.
2) Its cheaper elsewhere (I bought it at Walmart for $14).
3) The battery compartment is not screwed together. Presumably this is because you will be changing batteries so frequently that having to screw and unscrew the compartment would become an annoyance. However if you have younger kids they will be constantly taking out the batteries which is a pain (and possible safety hazard).

There are better hot wheels set out there, you may want to consider giving this one a pass.

1.0 out of 5 stars uses up batteries in 10 min. of play, August 24, 2010

I got this set for my grandsons to play with while visiting. It went together OK and they were excited to try it out. they had a lot of fun with it for about 10 min. when the new size D alkaline batteries went dead. so we swapped them out for a second set---again fresh, right out of the wrapper. Again, the batteries soon died. Perhaps the set I have has a defect?? I am returning it.

This track is a blast for about 5-10 min. then the batteries die. It only works when batteries are brand new with full charge, after that if doesn't have enough power to get the cars around the first turn. Be ready to invest alot of money in "D" batteries!

3.0 out of 5 stars A challenge to assemble ... for us, sadly, not worth it, June 13, 2010
This review is from: Hot Wheels Crash Course Starter Track Set (Toy)
Our son received quite a few birthday gifts recently, and we are opening one gift every other day.

We are now at this toy today. I was looking forward to quickly putting it together, so I could play with it. :)

I've been trying to assemble it now for the last hour and I'm not done yet! I now dread seeing "assembly required" on any of his toys, because of the amount of time and frustration it takes putting it together. I wish the instructions were simple and straightforward. I also wish they would estimate the amount of time it takes to assemble such a toy. (Novice: 45 minutes; Expert: 15 minutes!)

BTW, yes I'm a mom, but I'm the handygirl around the house. I have assembled many pieces of furniture and have built shelves in our garage and our closet, so I would have thought that putting together this toy would have taken me no time at all.

UPDATE June 28: Assembly was a little challenging, but I got it done. The entire set is quite large, and now just sits on our children's train table, unused ... even I've lost interest. :) The Hot Wheels car, that accompanied this set, shoots out very fast at the start, so I made sure that my little ones weren't on the other side of the set, in case the car went off the track. It's a fairly heavy car, which would hurt if it hit someone across the room. For that reason, I've decided to shelve this unit. Glad this was a gift.

2.0 out of 5 stars Our Experience, December 28, 2011
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hot Wheels Crash Course Starter Track Set (Toy)
A major problem we've had with this is that the cars refuse to stay on the track. The cars either fly off or get launched in such a manner that they wind up upside down. Some cars work better than others, but most of them have the previously mentioned problems. I thought we might have assembled it wrong, but we double checked and everything was connected correctly. We've tried adjusting it by lowering the curve with no success. I suppose it is possible that we got a defective unit.

Like other reviews say, this toy eats up batteries (and we're talking Energizers, not the cheapos you find at the dollar store). So it is not a cost effective means of entertainment in my opinion.

My son is four years old and received this for Christmas and it doesn't take a lot to entertain him, so in spite of the problems he has fun pushing the cars around the track. It also provided a lesson in the basics of assembly.

Hopefully if you purchase this you have better success than we have.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it, November 7, 2011
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hot Wheels Crash Course Starter Track Set (Toy)
We've had this product for about a year and have never been very happy with it. I would not recommend it; here are the reasons:

1) The idea of a crash set is functional only if there is more than one car - this set came with only one car and we have bought several more, hoping they would work in the course. NONE of the other cars (even Hot Wheels brand) will go all the way around the course. It's like there has to be a certain weight and design for them to work - such a bummer.

2) Like others said, the batteries are only strong enough right out of the package to give the car enough boost to go the whole way around the track. When they start to weaken, the car won't make it all the way around. Be prepared to go through lots of D batteries.

3) The battery compartment does not screw shut, so any child can open it and remove the batteries. Kind of a pain when you have small toddlers who get into everything. Also a pain to go hunting for the misplaced batteries when a child wants to play with this.

4) My son lost interest pretty quickly. The toy has been sitting in our garage for several months.

5) It takes up a lot of room and cannot be disassembled easily.

6) It is not very durable. Our track has a crack in it, presumably from trying to move it to get it out of my son's room.

I would recommend shopping around some more. I wish we could get our money back on this one and choose a more functional car track.

This is a great race track once an adult puts it together, but a child under the age of 5 or 6 would struggle to put it together. It takes up lots of room too, and once you put it together, you'd like it to stay up for a couple weeks for your child to play with so that they get the value of all your hard work in putting it together. I personally, wouldn't buy this particular set again. I have heard that the Toys r' us brand is fantastic, and easier for kids to put together themselves.
