"WHEELS" THE RACECAR (ON THE MOVE),
By
This review is from: Wheels the Racecar (On the Move) (Board book)
ISBN 1419400533 - Printed in China. Marked "Safety tested for children 36+ months." Board book, 12 pages, battery-operated sound effect button. Published by Paradise Press Inc. in 2005. Part of the On the Move series. By Julie Roseboom, illustrated by Eddie Roseboom.
In rhyming text, Wheels is ready for the big race. He races toward the finish line, making a pit stop along the way, but still managing to win the race. The board pages are sturdy enough to stand up to some abuse but are still thin enough to bend. They're glossy, too, so they wipe clean easily. The button is attached to the last page and protrudes through a die-cut hole in the front cover and every page in between. The hole is near the side and bottom edges on the book, leaving a fairly thin strip of cardboard that's more easily torn than the rest of the page. The batteries are replaceable and are secured with a small screw. The text, itself, is nice, though nothing special. But the editing of the text is awkward because the rhyming lines are in the common pattern of either every line or every other line rhyming. Sometimes, the rhyming word is right in the middle of a line. This makes it a really stilted read-aloud until you get used to it - and possibly even after. The illustrations are bright and colorful and fun, with eyes on everything from the checkered flag to the tools in the pit. Boys are harder than girls to turn into readers, so books like this that are aimed at boys are great tools. Not that girls won't enjoy the tale, too! - AnnaLovesBooks
