1) The FIRST thing to do is expose car to extreme cold (ice cold water or put in freezer for 1 minute)

2) The SECOND thing to do is expose car to warm water.

The problem everyone is having is they are exposing the car to warm/hot as the FIRST thing rather than the SECOND thing.

My three-year old friend Robbie "found" these cars propped up on the side of his bathtub the evening of his birthday party. The very idea that anything changes colors is fascinating to little kids (some big kids too). That they are CARS that change colors sealed the deal. Robbie's Mom tells me that these Hot Wheels have gotten a true workout and continue to keep Robbie occupied. When one was misplaced, Robbie promptly picked up his (toy) telephone and called me to ask me to come help look for it. Can't ask for much more in a present, can you?

My son is crazy about two things: cars and water. So I was thrilled when I found the Humvee color shifter at Target recently. I explained to him how it worked - warm water would make it yellow, cold water would make it dark blue.

Well, the warm water did turn it yellow, but cold water doesn't do a thing. It would not change back, leading to tears of frustration on my son's part. I ended up putting it into the freezer, where it turned green, not blue (it's supposed to turn the color of the stickers, thus camouflaging the stickers to become a regular humvee rather than a rescue truck).

Though the packaging says it will hold the color at room temperature, it started turning yellow as soon as it was out of the freezer. Now it's sort of got a blotchy green/yellow thing going on. Its only saving grace is that it's a car and can be pushed around like all his other Hotwheels and Matchboxes. Definitely not worth more than the $1 a regular car costs.

To those parents that were disappointed in the "cold" part of the color change, please be advised that after putting the car in a bowl of cold water with about 3 ice cubes, you need to stir the water around the car. At first I was disappointed, but then accidentally swished the water in the bowl and suddenly the car changed color. I bought my son 2 of these cars. He was so excited to see them change color. We submerged them in warm water, as stated on package, and absolutely nothing happened. We thought we were doing it wrong so we submerged it in very cold water, still, nothing happened; no change of color. Big waste of money--do not buy these Color Shifter toy cars!

This product doesn't deliver what it promises. As a reward for exceptional behavior, this car was promised to my 3 year old. We talked and talked about how cool this car was, really building it up. He worked hard and earned the reward only to find out that it was a big dud! To get it to turn a different color you have to put it in the freezer, not very practical at all. Then when you take it out it immediately starts to revert to the original color.
The whole idea was to have it one color at room temp. then put it in the warm bath to change it's color. That would be really cool if it happened, but it doesn't.
