COOL, SWINGING, JUMPING ALBUM!!,
By Glen P Salgado (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR MUSIC THAT'LL GET YOUR TOES TAPPING, AND BASICALLY PUT YOU A GOOD SWINGING MOOD, THEN "WHEELS START TURNING" IS SOMETHING YOU MIGHT WANT TO BUY. RARELY DO YOU FIND AN ALBUM WHERE ALL THE SONGS ON IT ARE WORTH LISTENING TO. THE BLUES JUMPERS HAVE AN OLD SCHOOL BLUES SOUND TO THEM THAT'LL PUT YOU IN A GOOD UPBEAT MOOD. IT'S VERY SELDOM I GIVE AN ALBUM 5 STARS, BECAUSE THERE AREN'T MANY OUT THERE WORTHY OF 5 STARS.

a really good sound,

This band has their own, great sound to add to the modern swingers. The singer's voice is unique -- so unique that, unfortunately, you have to be in the mood to hear a whole album of it. But when you are in that mood, watch out! All the musicians know their stuff. It's great that so many swinging bands are giving us a range of musical sounds, and this is one to buy!

Jump-Blues At Its Best!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Wheels Start Turning (Audio CD)
Out of all of the Swing albums released in the 90s "Wheels Start Turning", the Bules Jumpers debut CD is one of the best. No one in America has captured the energy of classic Jump-Blues, like the Bules Jumpers. Every track on this CD is a gem. One of the best things about this band is the unique vocal stylings of Eldrige Taylor. While Eldrige rivals the stylings of 40s-50s Jump-Blues master Wynonie Harris the rest of the band is so tight with thier playing that every song on this CD is guarenteed to fill the dance floor. The best tracks on "Wheels Start Turning" are hard to seporate from the average ones because they all have their special values. The Jumping tracks are "Wheels Start Turning, Chicken Wing and Chartruse". But Swing isn't all about just doing arials and sidecars on the dance floor, this album also includes some great ballads, "Where you found me" is a great broken heart reflection of a lost love. "Jim Bean" explores the lack of motivation on those days when you just don't feel like going to work. Grab this CD while you can and catch the band when you are in the NYC area. Becuase artists like this are few and far between.

Defies Words,

This is by far one of my top 2 albums. The songs are original, and unlike Royal Crown Revue or especially, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, the band is well rounded and all members play well. The album definitely has a strong blues flavor, but also has the slight humor signature of classic swing, for example "Good Mornin' Judge". If you are considering a new swing CD, buy this one. Save yourself from the agony of bad swing. ;-)

Blues Jumpers-Wheels Start Turning a neo-swing clasic.,

This cd is second to few. Only comparable to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in respect that you can listen to every song and not loose interest in the cd. You also got to love Taylor's voice man. This cat gives the band a unique sound and can get any swinger out there dancing.

Best of the Swing revival,
By A Customer

I'm a big fan of Brian Setzer, Big Bad VooDoo Daddy, etc. This is more blues-y than those, and musically superior. This is my favorite album so far this year. Hope more people discover it.

In the midst of the Neo-Swing revival came this gem from a bunch of NY area session pros. While most of the Neo-swing bands merely ape the classic swing & jump blues of the 40's, these guys sound like the real deal. Forget most of those revivalist posers & do yourself a favor and track this one down-you can thank me later!

still holding strong,
This review is from: Wheels Start Turning (Audio CD)
I've had this CD for over a decade and it's still one of my favorites. It's just a fun listen! The lead vocalist has a delivery and style that is reminiscent of a more energetic Leon Redbone, but he makes each song his own. It's rare to find a CD you can plug in, hit shuffle, and enjoy almost every track that pops up.

Bouncy, Bluesy, Swingy Fun,
By Gus the Goldfish (Fishbowl, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wheels Start Turning (Audio CD)
This little gem from the late 90's psuedo-swing fad remains quite listenable, even 8 years later, and doesn't even sound dated. This is quite an accomplishment.
Heywood Gregory's vocals dominate the album, clear, quirky and stylized as he belts out preposterous songs about chicken wings, chartruese hair, shiftlessness, alcoholism, and encounters with the legal system. This isn't a masterpiece, but it isn't meant to be. But what it tries to be is fun, and it succeeds masterfully.

Wow i bought this cd very cheap on Amazon the first time i heard
this band i was not that crazy about it.But as i played it more i really like it,i think the vocals where a litte weird at first very different and rather strange but now this is what makes this cd great! The music to me is more swing then blues but it is very good and they all play great with some solo's on sax, it seem's that one instrument is high-lighted in every song trumpet etc i must say some people will not like this sound but if given a few play's i hope you like it as much as i do ! 5 star's people ! If your willing to take a chance on something different this is it! Enjoy!!! |
