Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-8--Gourley has worked in association with the Henry Ford Museum to provide an accurate account of her subject's life while relating an interesting story. A variety of archival photos, etchings, and reproductions lend graphic interest to every page, and each chapter is headed with a quote from the inventor himself. Ford started with a driving need to open watches and other mechanical items to learn how they work; in adulthood he applied this knowledge to his own innovations. His life is an inspiring example of someone who used his talents to become successful and who changed history by his inventions. Younger children will enjoy the interesting and readable text, while older students will find facts and photos for research projects. An attractive and well-documented addition.

More About the Author

Visit Cathy at www.catherinegourley.com!!

I write social histories--stories about ordinary people who find themselves, usually by choice, in extraordinary circumstances. My latest book explores a grim chapter in American history--the Andersonville Civil War Prison Camp. More often, however, I write about women's history through the lens of media and popular culture. When I'm not writing nonfiction books for young adults, I am managing Letters About Literature, a reading and writing promotion program of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress or watching old movies. I am the principal curriculum writer for The Story of Movies, an educaitonal outreach program of Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation. I grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, but I have lived along the Gulf Coast of Texas, Chicago, a tiny town in Western Pennsylvania on the edge of Elk Forest, Connecticut . . . well, in short, I move around a lot. Right now home is Woodbridge, Virginia.

5.0 out of 5 stars clear, interesting biography of Henry Ford, March 4, 1999

This book is very well written and would be of interest to kids from 4 to 14! I love the design - large photographs, and the little interesting details of Henry's life. For any child who prefers machines to marbles...
