Goldenwood "Wheels of the World", January 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Wheels Of The World (Audio CD)
A trio of fine musicians from Virginia play a delightful variety of music on this 1997 collection, from artful readings of traditional classical works (from Tartini and Bach), to original arrangements of celtic songs and dances. The trio is composed of Barbara Kay Heitz on flute and piccolo, Gloria Stearns on violin and the very versatile Rick Schmidt, who plays the cello, viola, violin, guitar, and even an African Ashiko drum. The blending of instruments is very balanced and controlled, but with a feeling of joy for the very act of playing. The range of music on this album is remarkable, creating a link between clasical music and folk traditions. The Goldenwood trio has managed to give this music a timeless, effervescent quality, and it is a pleasure to hear a group with such a varied repetoire. "Wheels of the World" is a fine effort from three sensitive musicians who haven't forgotten that music is to be fully enjoyed.
