4.0 out of 5 stars Good information to have., June 8, 1999
By A Customer
A technical book that explains the reasons parents get angry, how that affects children, and gives suggestions on how to get control of angry emotions. Lots of data to back up their ideas. For more practical ideas on how to handle parents and kids anger I'd suggest two books by Elizabeth Pantley - Kid Cooperation (How to Stop Yelling, Nagging and Pleading) and Perfect Parenting Dictionary of 1000 Parenting Tips with entries such as: Child's Anger, Parents Anger, Disrespect, Expressions of Hate, Fighting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have parenting book, October 21, 2001

I'm going to say that this is THE best parenting book I've read (and believe me, I've read a lot!). I don't consider anger to be a big problem of mine, but nonetheless this book taught me how to keep my patience and has some awesome tips. If you're a mom or dad striving to build a great relationship with your child, go ahead and read it.

This book explains about your emotions and trying to raise children. Some of us have short fuses and need to learn how to rethink situations that could lead to harmful situations for both parents and children. I find the material very helpful. I also bought this book for a friend who was interested in the topic and she loves it too. My husband bought it and had not touched it yet but I will keep reminding him. Great and interesting book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple look to the complex damage anger does to you and your family, June 8, 2011

This review is from: When Anger Hurts Your Kids: A Parent's Guide (Hardcover)
Very well written book. Kicked to the curb my temper and taught me how to be more patient. It is a must-have book in the pinnacle of behavioral books that show us how to deal with life's challenges, so that we can generate more happiness for our family and for us.

If a kid were smart, careful, insightful, never disappointing, never at fault, well-behaved, etc....the kid could've run the country, could've gone to the moon, could've cooked fancy dishes, talked in public, etc...and That would have confused or worried me more.

But a kid of 5-year old, or 9-year old, or 2-year old will behave as a 5-year old, a 9-year old, a 2-year old, and so on.

Thus, our anger is not justified. It just needs to be educated so it will dissipate.

4.0 out of 5 stars DYI CBT for anger, October 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I got htis book to use with my clients...its basically cognitive behavioral therapy focusing on anger. I recommended for other professionals to expand how you target automatic thoughts as well as lay people wanting to manage their anger.

because it is CBT you can't just read the book, you must actually do the exercises and homework. CBT requires practice and dillegence...as with anything requiring change it takes effort and practice...if you are willing then this book will help you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Parents Who Have Trouble with Anger, July 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's normal for parents to get upset with their kids from time to time. It's not good though, to be angry at your kids all the time, because it can hurt them. When Anger Hurts Your Kids, is a book that teaches parents how to control their angry feelings and better manage their frustrations.

The book begins with a questionaire to evaluate if a parent might have a problem with anger. It introduces the concept of keeping an anger diary. The next chapters explain why parents get angry and why kids act the way they do.

The chapters on changing what you think and changing what you do are very helpful. These chapters help identify trigger thoughts that can quickly lead to uncontrolled anger. There are many suggestions on what to do when one starts to feel angry. A three-week relaxation plan is provided to help parents feel more calm and in control.

The authors acknowledge that if anger is a problem, it's going ot take a lot of practice implementing the ideas to really learn how to change things. The advice in this book is very helpful. It's a good start for parents struggling with anger.
