For those with open hearts,
By "kcraft@iastate.edu" (Ames, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When Animals Speak: Advanced Interspecies Communication (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for readers who already accept telepathic animal communication as reality. As the subtitle states, this is ADVANCED Interspecies Communication. Begin with wonderful books such as Patty Summers' Talking With the Animals and Arthur Meyers' Communicating With Animals and practice with your animal companions before tackling the concepts presented here. As I continue to learn and improve my own telepathic connection, I reread sections of When Animals Speak and more and more of Penelope's statements that seemed beyond belief are now fitting like puzzle pieces into my newly-expanded worldview. I especially appreciate Penelope's candor as she describes being torn between providing the safe environment she'd like for her animals or granting them the autonomy for which they long. And I'm grateful for the wise words and lessons from the animal teachers which Penelope shares with the rest of us.

Crackpot or charlatan?,

This review is from: When Animals Speak: Advanced Interspecies Communication (Paperback)
I started this book with an open mind, really wanting to believe. As I read through the chapters, I could literally feel the doors slamming shut in my brain. I went from hope, to disbelief, to anger at paying money for this kind of unadulterated, new-age garbage. Penelope Smith claims to be able to communicate telepathically with animals. She claims to be an animal lover. As I read chapter after chapter, I became progressively more horrified as she told stories of her neglect and abuse of the animals under her care. The healthy Afghan hound she had put down, ostensibly because "She asked me to help her leave her body and this plane of existence", when in reality she just couldn't deal with having the dog around at the time. The other Afghan hound that showed symptoms of suffering from a brain tumor that she let go 5 days without eating, meditating over it to "Help it leave its body" instead of taking it for a quick and merciful end. This was her favorite dog that she couldn't seem to let go of. The tales of how she let her dogs run free in the woods to chase deer. She complains about her neighbors "Because they were sometimes quite critical and hostile". Well, perhaps that had something to do with the fact that Smith let her 2 dogs roam free, and both of them bit her neighbor while she was out jogging? Or could it have been that Smith's cat Sherman (who also was allowed to roam the countryside) got in the habit of visiting these same beleaguered neighbors, beating up and bullying their cats? Smith says to Sherman, "How could you do this?" She makes him promise not to do it again. He does it again. Three more times. Then there's the story of the 2 dogs that she let breed uncontrolled twice, because she thought it would be nice to have the puppies. This in spite of the fact that the female dog had severe behavior problems, and came from a line of dogs that displayed vicious and uncontrollable behavior.Smith has a glib answer and a spiritual reason for her neglect and abuse of the animals under her care. She even admits that she calls the vet only as a last resort. This, from a woman who lives in a very wealthy part of California; a woman who makes a lot of money using these animals to "teach" gullible people how to communicate telepathically with them. As I read, I went back and forth, wondering, "Is this woman delusional, or is she a slick and conniving charlatan?" After reading her explanation that Afghan hounds did not evolve on Earth, but rather were brought here from outer space in their present form, I'm starting to believe she is both. Oh wait, I think I'm getting a telepathic communication from Smith's animals...yes, it's coming in loud and clear...it's... "GET US OUT OF HERE!"

One of my absolute favorite books of all time!,
By EG (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When Animals Speak: Advanced Interspecies Telepathic Communication (Paperback)
I have dozens and dozens of books in the fields of Spirituality, New Age and Eastern Religion, and this book is one of the most inspiring, deeply moving, and life changing in my collection. I have read things in this book that I have not found anywhere else. Penelope's experiences of animal communication rings true to my heart. Her abilities and experiences have had a profound impact on my world view and have inspired me greatly. Reality is far vaster and far more magical than we have been taught to believe. While others may find this possibility threatening, I find it liberating and a way of connecting with my soul's truth.

Comforting in Enlightenment,
This review is from: When Animals Speak: Advanced Interspecies Communication (Paperback)
I feel this book is very very Englightening. It is arrogant to assume that there are no other life forms out there or that no one else can talk to animals just because we can't. As usual, it is seperating the crazy ones from the geunine ones. It gave me a deep understanding on how the animals co-function on both in spiritual and physical form. Not everything was easy to understand. The language was simple but the concept seem difficult to grasp, but thats because it exists on another realm/ world. Keep your eyes open. It help me to understand why my dog is My dog and where she will branch off too. Read this book, its very worth a shot. but you need an open mind to read this.

Guidebook to a Profound Journey,
This review is from: When Animals Speak: Advanced Interspecies Telepathic Communication (Paperback)
When Animals Speak is an original, groundbreaking work in the field of telepathic animal communication. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in expanding their own telepathic abilities, and also for animal lovers who want to deepen their understanding of the animals in their lives. Ms. Smith's connection with animals as complete, spiritual beings is the foundation of her work as an animal communicator, teacher, and spiritual evolutionary leader, and this awareness and perspective infuses her writing with gentleness, warmth, and a good deal of humor. Ms. Smith's clear examples and honest descriptions of her experiences with her own animal companions, as well as those of her clients, make this book a heartfelt, fascinating read.
This book has been my companion and guide for many years. I have found that I return it again and again for its wisdom, warmth, and deep insights about both human and non-human animals. It has been a hugely important resource for me in deepening my own telepathic connection with animals and all life, and I find that I regularly pick it up and gain new insights and clarity. Penelope Smith guides her readers and students to experience the spiritual essence of each being, including ourselves. Reading this book will take you on a path of opening your heart, quieting your mind, and bringing you closer to understanding the truth of your own soul. It takes honesty, suspension of mind chatter and limiting beliefs, and unwavering courage to pursue the journey of relating to animals as fellow beings and travelers on the path, and allowing them to be not only our companions and friends, but our teachers and guides as well. The rewards of opening to this experience are immeasurable: a deeper connection with all of life, and a deeper connection to the beauty and truth of your own being.

Beyond Expectations,
This review is from: When Animals Speak: Advanced Interspecies Telepathic Communication (Paperback)
What is the size of the 'door' through which our beliefs enter? Is it large or small, open or closed? As I read this book, I felt: here is the truth. These animals have hearts and minds and spirits. Each is an individual being, just as real as you or me. Scientific research often focuses on animals' ability to understand and respond to humans, instead of what they feel and experience in their own lives and with others of their kind. Science is not necessarily off course, just narrow. Intuitive animal communication is less limited because it is not just looking for what we might expect to find. Penelope Smith (PS) discusses how we have habitually invalidated ourselves and each other as we receive and share communication with animals, and how much we all miss by doing this. I believe that we communicate all the time, but we usually don't think it works! This book is a big step in looking beyond all that, in her experience and for others. This book covers all kinds of communication, with animals, plants, nature itself, spirit contacts, and more. I didn't keep up with some of the 'farther out' sections of the book, but they are there for those who want to explore more. The life and death stories were very interesting. Especially in the story of the rabbit family's deaths I had such a feeling of the naturalness of death, not struggle, but 'going from one room to the next'. The story of the life and death of her Afghan friend Pasha is certainly the most moving. PS shows death is to be respected, rather than hated or denied. How hard it is to read her words of anguish, but how present she is to each nuance of caring and respect for Pasha's dying. I too have been present for the lengthy dying time of an animal friend, compounded by the rural lack of access to vet care and bad roads, asking myself, "What is best, what is right? What does my beloved companion want, and how can I help?" It is very challenging to experience that at length, as she describes with Pasha. Yet in the moment, all we really can do is to be present. Sometimes there just is no rescue, and death must be faced, by the one who is dying, and by those who love them. I chose one communication from a song sparrow, to convey the overall feeling of this book: "Life is good. Death is necessary. Renewal is constant. Spirit is ever present. . . . The Spirit in all moves us in different ways to experience infinite creation. Figuring out why is not our way. We know deep in our cores. Life is its own reason. There is no more to understand."

Disappointing,
By John (South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When Animals Speak: Advanced Interspecies Telepathic Communication (Paperback)
The book is disjointed and repetitive - not only within itself but also with regard to her other books. This is more about the author and her experiences and emotions than instructive. At times her credibility is questionable. Very difficult to read to the end. Definitely the worst Animal Communication book that I have read.

How Sad,

This review is from: When Animals Speak: Advanced Interspecies Communication (Paperback)
If you think you can learn anything valuable from a person who believes they were once a Yetti (Big Foot) in a previous life, who communicates with faeires, and can control the elements, then spend your money. You won't be disappointed. This woman is totally off her rocker. She believes she communicated with a horse with an evil spirit, the spirit left the horse after she spoke with it, and then caused planetary changes and the demise of Communism. HUH? The woman is totally out of touch with nature, her spiritual side, and most importantly herself. Go back to the basics Penelope. Learn to love the animals again for who they are. Do not impose on them your own distorted beliefs.

What a hoot! This book is fabulous and very entertaining, well worth the money. I found it in a bookstore and could not put it down. It will provide you with plenty of hilarious anecdotes and ridiculous stories to amuse your friends. Anyone who does not like this book probably was taking it too seriously, or didn't fully realize what they would get from a book on "interspecies telepathic communication." High ratings for imagination and camp value, new age to the hilt, and absolutely, completely, totally out there. And, yes, as a previous reviewer alluded to, she has her own way of relating to and caring for animals - definitely not the way I would treat an animal in my care. I give it a 5 star rating over all.
