5.0 out of 5 stars Wish they had more
I bought both of Saraya's albums when they came out. Still play 'em regularly today. It's just good ol' American kickass rock and roll! Love the riff on Hitchin' A Ride. I still remember most of the lyrics to both albums. Sandi's voice is fantastic, and the guitar work is sharp. They certainly stand out of the hair band crowd, and I have a lot of hair band CDs...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the first one.
The first Saraya album is very impressive, this one less so. Some of the tunes seem to run on a bit long, as well.

BTW, Danger Danger was an awesome hair band, one of the best the genre produced. And fans call them D2, not Danger2. Don't know what the heck Danger2 is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A completely overlooked band & album, December 19, 2007
This review is from: When the Blackbird Sings (Audio CD)
I bought the debut CD in a bargain "throw-out" bin over 17 years ago for some ridiculously cheap amount and still reckon that that album rates as one of my all time favourites. I still cannot understand why they were not incredibly huge & successful - great songs with huge hooks, impressive musicianship (and a hot looking singer to boot!).

This second album (and sadly the only other album) was every bit as good as the first while evolving the band into a slightly heavier and more complex outfit. The songs have a bit more edge to them while still keeping the huge hooks that have them going through your head for days after. There really is not one bad track on the CD which I think is an incredible achievment. If you have a chance, grab this CD as they are getting harder & harder to find - you will not regret it - one of the best examples of melodic 80's heavy rock ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Tape is long gone...., April 9, 2003
This review is from: When the Blackbird Sings (Audio CD)
Saraya, I think she was married to one of the guys in Tesla at one time, probably not still. Sandi and the guys here put out a great record way back when, just saw it (not sure it is really available- it's like one of those, it's here , but we don't really have it CD's I think--ya gotta jump through hoops to get the good stuff), although you can get any Pink or No Doubt CD at your corner record store. These guys rocked , it was kinda heavy on guitars and Saraya's vocals were top notch. They had a video for Seducer which along with many of the songs were very hook heavy and filled with catchy chorus's. Lions Den is still one of my favorite songs from the CD, even though I havn't heard it in 10 years, damn I shoulda bought the used one I saw about 5 years ago! Someday someone will re issue all those forgotten "hair band's" that shouldn't have been lumped into the awful bunch of Warrants, Trixters, and Danger2. If this is actually available, get it--and love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just another "chick rock" album, March 30, 2011
This review is from: When the Blackbird Sings (Audio CD)
1991's When the Blackbird Sings is the second album from Saraya, one of the best, most overlooked melodic rock bands to emerge in the late `80s. Led by vocal powerhouse Sandi Saraya, this band puts just about every other female-fronted rock band to shame.

Saraya was never about pretty little love songs or a glam image. Take away the vocals and this is still a first rate melodic rock album with strong songs on par with what Tyketto, Von Groove and Giant were releasing at the time. Of course, Saraya's vocals make them that much more impressive. She has a great voice that's anything but light, adding real power and emotion. When the Blackbird Sings has a somewhat darker, more blues rocking vibe than the debut, which really suits Saraya's vocals. You can hear it especially on the rawkin' "Hitchin' a Ride" and "Lion's Den."

If you're a fan of the late `80s and early `90s melodic rock sound, especially bands with female vocals, When the Blackbird Sings is a must-have album. It's just a shame this disc is so hard to find. I'm surprised a label like Rock Candy or even Wounded Bird hasn't reissued it yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart meets Ratt, July 25, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: When the Blackbird Sings (Audio CD)
I couldn't help comparing this group to Heart the whole time I was listening to it. I especially liked "When you see me again" . The riffs reminded me very much of Ratt. "Tear down the wall" is another good one that actually gave me the impression that they may have been influenced some by Dokken or even Def Leppard. "Foolin'" came to mind. "Seducer" shows off the seductive rocker attitude and really draws my attention to Ann Wilson's style which almost nobody could match. Sandi sure has a voice that can carry any group. This cd proves it. It's a good addition to any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of THE BEST albums by ANYONE - EVER!!, July 16, 2005
By
This review is from: When the Blackbird Sings (Audio CD)
I know this review is rated at Five Stars, but only because there was no way to give it SEVEN!!

I bought this when it came out, without hearing a note - her debut is that good! This one is even better! In fact, this is one of the five best albums of ALL TIME!

How this girl did't rule the f*@+?#g world I have no idea! Her voice is as pure as Ann Wilson, as vicious as Doro Pesch & as soulful as Amanda Marshall, with all the power of Grace Slick in her heyday. She's also an outstanding poet, more sensitive & intelligent than anyone out there today (except Amanda Marshall), & her delivery lets you know she MEANS it! "Seducer" is one of the best songs EVER, a perfect hard rock song in every detail, from opening whisper to screaming coda! "Hope For A New World" is perhaps the best acoustic ballad by any metal queen ever, a perfect closer that only leaves you wanting more! Every song is outstanding, both lyrically & musically, & her back-up band (featuring guitarist Tony Bruno, now with Joan Jett) is hot on every track!

Anyone who doesn't think this is an OUTSTANDING rock album shouldn't be trusted to babysit your puppy - or to write music reviews!! Any moron who says this album stinks probably listens to A-lame-ass More-as-shat, & should be euthanized in the name of the betterment of humanity!!

BUY THIS CD!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!
