This review is from: When the Wind Blows South (Audio CD)
Philip Chaffin's CD release entitled When the Wind Blows South scores a goal in my book! Philip can sing very well and albums like this prove it. Philip's voice is quite strong and yet it has just a kernel of softness wrapped up inside of it that must endear him to his fans. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very thoughtfully laid out.

"Loving You" showcases Philip's exquisite voice; he delivers this ballad very well and the relatively sparse musical arrangement highlights Philip`s performance all the more. His excellent diction enhances his singing and he never misses a beat--terrific! "Leaving On A Jet Plane," written by John Denver and Kenneth Browder and performed by Peter, Paul and Mary, gets a great musical arrangement on this CD. Philip plays with the tempo a bit to place his own stamp on "Leaving On A Jet Plane." However, when Philip sings some of the most passionate words to the song "so kiss me and smile for me, tell me that you'll wait for me," he sticks to the more traditional way of singing these words but even then his voice makes it new and amazing. "Love Walked In" is a George Gershwin tune that Philip aces as effortlessly as it were just breathing. Of course we know that it really wasn't all that easy but Philip Chaffin's talent carries him through. I particularly like the country twist to the music for "Love Walked In;" it really adds a whole new dimension to it and it's clearly a major highlight of this album.

"Now That I Need You (Where Are You?)" has Philip singing at his usual best; the piano sounds great and "Now That I Need You (Where Are You?)" has a piano bar/cabaret/lounge music flavor to it that I enjoy very much. "Now That I Need You (Where Are You?)" is very classy; and listen also for "Pardon My Southern Accent" penned by Irving Aaronson. I'm not familiar with this song but it sure does sound great! That upbeat melody has what it takes to make this a memorable number and "Pardon My Southern Accent" is good, clean fun.

"Is It Too Late?" even shows Philip singing at the lower end of his vocal range; his vocal range impresses me and "Is It Too Late?" is very pretty. "I Got Out of Bed on the Right Side" is another song for pure fun and you won't get bored listening to this tune anytime soon! Philip really bats these songs right out of the ballpark. "Here You Come Again" features Philip squarely front and center; but that backup chorus works nicely, too. "Here You Come Again" gets a lush arrangement that doesn't sound overdone and that's another sign of good taste and class. The album ends with Philip Chaffin performing "In a Sentimental Mood." "In a Sentimental Mood" has Philip singing this with great sensitivity and it works well. It also leaves you wanting more!

Philip Chaffin is no newcomer to the entertainment world; and he'll only get better with time. He really succeeds at doing these classic ballads with clever Dixie styled arrangements. This album is a "must-have" for Philip's fans and it also makes a great introductory CD for people like me who are just getting to know about Philip Chaffin.

Great job, Philip! Thank you!

Mellow, fun, and refreshing. Just close your eyes; Chaffin's southern-honey voice will gently rock you back through the decades and put you in that quaint porch swing.

I recognized some of the songs; others were new to me. All were fun. I was ready to run out and buy a Swiss dot sundress and parasol and meet my best guy at the soda fountain. :)

Philip touches us down in nearly every decade from the 1930s forward and puts a fresh twist on each song. I think my two favorite songs on the album are I Never Has Seen Snow and Pardon My Southern Accent. "Pardon" has a Dixieland band feel - you're off the porch and kickin' it up in New Orleans' French Quarter. I was pleasantly surprised by Here You Come Again and Leaving on a Jet Plane. It's hard to take a song that's ingrained in me and make me like another version, but Chaffin did that.

I don't know where else you can find a mix of John Denver, the Gershwins, Johnny Mercer, Truman Capote, Duke Ellington, and an old Dolly Parton hit blending together so beautifully. Only with Chaffin's warm voice inviting y'all to come on in.
