About the Author

Alice Cotton is a professional illustration artist whose interest in drawing historical architecture became a passion when she worked as an artist in New Orleans, Louisiana. “I was surrounded by some of the most beautiful architecture in the country,” she says, “and I couldn’t stop drawing it.” Alice believes that the arts should be interwoven throughout the infrastructure of our cities, and she has developed a course for children and teachers that combines the teaching of mathematics and the sciences with the inspirational development of art and design. She teaches this class through the Math Learning Center at Portland State University and for various public after-school classes. Alice has also devoted a portion of her illustration business to homeowners who wish to see their homesportrayed in her illustrative style, encouraging homeowners to see their homes as part of a community ofarchitectural art. She lives with her husband in Portland, Oregon, in a charming 1912 Craftsman bungalow.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very rich find, April 29, 2001

This review is from: When Buildings Speak (Paperback)
This book is a delightful mixture of beautiful artwork, well edited and written historical facts, fanciful story, and compelling insight. It's rare to find a book so richly textured that is also easy and fun to read! The author's voice, a voice passionate about her work and the buidlings she draws, really comes through. And her descriptions and stories are entertaining and eloquently written. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in beautiful art, historical architecture, Oregon history, or in a fun, enjoyable read.
