Intelligent ensemble,
By Arthur B. Hayes (Dickerson, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When It Comes Upon You (Audio CD)
Touch Acoustra; Intelligent ensemble jazz with a rich variety that rewards repeated listenings. Lead by Washington DC guitarist Rob Coltun, a core trio with bassist Paul Phillips and drummer Byron McWilliams host a variety of talented guest artists including Nora Jones. On the only cover tune of the CD, Ms Jones owns the Carol King/ Gerry Goffin classic, Will you still love me tomorrow. Nora's understated style works perfectly and the band supports her, giving the same easy pace and feel. The title track has Rob Burger on pump organ that lends a folk feel to a lovely lilting melody line that is my personal favorite. The recording is top flight; Produced by Adam Levy, recorded in New York at Sorcerer Studio. These may be in large part DC area players, but make no mistake; this is a national level production. The rhythm section is relaxed and steady with the twisting guitar lines and guest horn riffs winding a blue path between them. There is such a variety of artists that this work can be played time and time again without losing a freshness.
