Book Description

What would you give to have someone back from the grave, even for an hour or two? Better yet, what would you say?

For those who've loved and lost yet find themselves still looking for answers, this heart-warming book tells the story of how Robby discovers love, life, death, and dogs. But what really happened back in his hometown of Chicago...and is it happening again? There's only one place to find the truth...and only one creature who can tell him. A humorous look at all that can be found when all seems lost, WHEN DAD CAME BACK AS MY DOG recounts the somewhat fictional but mostly true tale of a prominent Windy City family.

Robert Alexander is The New York Times bestselling author of The Kitchen Boy and other historical novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and great book for all ages December 10, 2011

This book from this prolific author represents a departure from his suspense novels. Yet it is as compelling a page-turner as any of his other books. It is a sweet, humorous and heartwarming story of resolving grief. It speaks in a universal way to anyone who has dealt with an early loss and isn't quite finished working out the relationship. It is well-written and a fast and memorable read. It definitely will resonate with all of us that know our dogs have old souls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended! August 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"When My Dad Came back as my Dog" was recommended to me by a friend, and what a great recommendation it was! I had never read anything from Robert Alexander and with the unusual title, I didn't really know what to expect. I thought it was a spectacular read on many, many levels. I found the writing to be smooth and easy as I was able to melt into the story right away, despite some of the rather outlandish premise. Very clever, funny, touching, heartfelt and inspiring. Great, great read! For those who have ever loved a dog, Robert captures every ounce of that experience with precise accuracy. His narrative on the simple behaviors and quirks of man's best friend are brilliant. And just when you think you are reading a simple story about a man and his dog, Robert mixes in perfectly the theme of loss of family...and the unanswered questions that often follow that loss, that torment and plague us as humans. Great job Robert! Beautiful book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! July 5, 2011

Finished this book last night and thought it was terrific. The story was a strange
mixture of history, authorial audacity, humor and even redemption. Part memoir,
part fantasy, this latest effort by Robert Alexander touched me deeply. The story
will resonate with anyone who has every lost a parent at a young age. Highly
recommended.
