Book Description

If someone asks single mother Frankie Castor to clear a room, she’ll smile and find a vacuum cleaner. Ryan Harper, on the other hand, uses a gun. Is it possible they can work together when their lives depend on it?

Frankie’s returned to her childhood home in Montana to help care for her mother. Her biggest worries are balancing the budget and the upkeep of an aging home. When she offers a man a ride home from the hospital, she never imagines she’ll end up having to choose between her daughter’s life and matters of national security that could cost the lives of millions.

Ryan returns to his family home to find a way to prove he didn’t leak vital information on a covert ops mission gone south. As he searches for the meaning of a file he’s kept hidden from the mission, he has no idea that international mercenaries have been searching for it—and him. When the mercenaries come after Ryan, he’s torn. Fighting for his country wars with fighting to rescue people he loves.

Set against a Montana mountain backdrop, When Danger Calls is a story filled with action, adventure, and romance, where the stakes keep getting higher and higher.

Excerpt:

Frankie took his elbow. “You’re still shaky. I think you should stick around here, where someone can keep an eye on you.”

His mouth narrowed. “No, I need to get away. It’s complicated, but I don’t want anyone to know I’m here.” He stared over her shoulder for a moment, as if it took a long time for the words to line up before he spoke. “Can I impose on you for a lift to a motel? I’d like to be nearby.”

He lifted his arms shoulder height, palms upward, then did a slow pivot. “I’m not armed. And I don’t bite. Promise. In a few minutes I’ll be out of your hair.”

Logic said to give him cab fare. She checked her wallet, and didn’t think three dollars would get him anywhere. She remembered his gentle touch on the dance floor. At the moment, he was in no condition to do anything to hurt her. She’d have him at a motel in a few minutes. Instinct trumped logic. “My car’s outside. Can you walk?”

About the Author

Terry Odell was born in Los Angeles and now makes her home in Divide, Colorado. An avid reader (her parents tell everyone they had to move from their first home because she finished the local library), she always wanted to "fix" stories so the characters did what she wanted, in books, television, and the movies. Once she began writing, she found this wasn't always possible, as evidenced when the mystery she intended to write rapidly became a romance.

However, her entry into the world of writing can be attributed to a "mistake" when her son mentioned the Highlander television series on a visit home. Being the "good mother" she began watching the show and soon connected with the world of fanfiction, first as a reader, then as a critique giver, and then, one brave weekend, she wrote her first short story.

Things snowballed and soon she was writing her first original novel. Much later, she mentioned something about a recent Highlander episode to her son, and he said, "Oh, I've never actually watched the show, I just thought the concept was cool." Little did he know what he'd started.

With a degree in Psychology from UCLA, she loves getting into the minds of her characters, turning them loose in tight spots and seeing what they do. Too often, they surprise her.

STORY BRIEF:
Ryan is a former Navy SEAL who currently works for a covert ops group, protecting national security. Ryan goes to Panama to get a CD with information. He is attacked and barely escapes. He quits his job and stays with his dad for awhile on their ranch in Montana. Frankie is a single mom who quit her job and moved to Montana to stay with her mother Anna. Frankie works as a substitute art teacher in the local school and a part-time cocktail waitress. Anna has an elderly boyfriend Bob. Frankie fears that Bob may be after Anna for her money and that he might have something to do with some recent accidental injuries to Anna.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
The two main characters are likeable. Some mercenaries come to Montana searching for the CD which causes danger for Ryan and those around him. This danger part of the story is entertaining and good. There is a mystery about what is going on with Bob and Anna which is not as good - see Spoiler below. A third storyline is Ryan's interaction and developing relationship with Molly, Frankie's 5-year-old daughter, which is nice. The ending is pleasantly warm. I had two minor problems described below.

For several scenes the author used a cliffhanger style of writing which had the effect of "commercial interruptions" for me. I prefer that the author finish each scene at a logical conclusion before switching to another scene with other characters. For example on page 80, Ryan and Dalton are searching in the woods. Dalton says "I think I've got a little problem here." "That Dalton had spoken told him whatever the problem was, stealth wasn't necessary. Still, he regretted that his Glock was in his nightstand drawer." The author then switches to a Frankie scene for three pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Western Mystery November 4, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a well done mystery with an interesting plot, well developed characters and great local color. I could have done without the gratuitous and lengthy sex scenes, however, which did nothing to advance the plot.

Book was reasobably good but dragged a little. The multi page blow-by-blow account of sex were not necessary - probably won't read another Blackthorne novel because of it

4.0 out of 5 stars Romance and hard suspense August 8, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I like Terry Odell's writing. It's sharp edged where the suspense is concerned and tender in the romance category. Ryan is tough and knows what he wants. When it isn't working for Blackthorne, Inc., it's pursuing Frankie, who is a quirky character, very likeable and also tough. Both are a good match for each other. I'll read more of Odell's books.Montana Promises

4.0 out of 5 stars exciting romantic suspense December 25, 2008
Format:Hardcover
Following his second failed black ops mission in which people died and he is injured, Blackthorne agent Ryan Harper is put on medical leave. He knows that everyone at the private security firm assumes he turned rogue, but he believes someone inside caused the two failures; they were set up and he plans to bring that person down as a little girl who died in the first fiasco haunts him. Thus Ryan retrieved the container he was sent to obtain, but tells his boss otherwise so he can learn why something allegedly minor caused deaths.

Ryan returns to his hometown of Broken Bow, Montana to stay with his Pop on the ranch. He meets Gladys a waitress at the Three Elks and is attracted to her. Ryan later learns she is an elementary school art teacher Frankie Castor, a single mom to precocious six year old Molly. Frankie worries about her mom who has suffered two injuries since starting a relationship with Bob Dwyer. As Ryan and Frankie fall in love, he comes to the rescue of her, Molly, and Molly's "friend" Mr. Snuggles even as someone wants what he possesses from his last mission; that person is willing to harm his loved ones something that is unacceptable to Ryan.

This is an exciting romantic suspense that grips readers from the onset when Ryan's cakewalk mission turns ugly and never slows down as his work arrives at Big Sky Country. The cast is very strong especially the lead couple and their immediate family. Although major coincidence twice involving land takes somewhat away from this fine thriller, fans will appreciate Ryan's reactions WHEN DANGER CALLS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicely done April 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ryan Harper is a successful operative for Blackthorne Inc., a company that offers security services. However, his last two operations were complete disasters, which even created the gossip that Harper might have cooperated with "the other side". Blackthorne himself offers Ryan an extended leave and afterwards regular bodyguard duty until some light can be thrown on the unsuccessful operations, which is completely unacceptable for Ryan who quits his duty. After years in active service, Ryan decides to return to his home town in Montana, lay low and find out who could be responsible for his botched missions. In the local bar of his small home town he meets Frankie Castor who has also returned with her little daughter Molly home. Disappointed in the male human species, Frankie gradually comes to appreciate the tight-lipped and secretive Ryan, especially when he helps her to save her daughter. Ryan on the other hand is attracted to the young woman who seems to see only the bright moments in life. However, soon his professional life catches up with Ryan and endangers Frankie and her daughter.

Ryan was an interesting main character, who throughout the plot matured and discovered character traits he didn't even know he had. I found his relationship with his father very unusual and interesting and would have liked to read more about his brother. His dedication to his not so common job was admirable and I very much liked how he persuaded Frankie that he could be an active member of both "worlds".

Frankie on the other hand was an adequate heroine who did a perfect job with Molly and her own mother.

My published works include the Pine Hills Police Series, the Blackthorne, Inc. series as well as the Romantic Suspense novel, What's in a Name? and the Mapleton Mystery series. I've also published numerous short stories with The Wild Rose Press.

I'm an active member of Romance Writers of America, and its Kiss of Death chapter, as well as Mystery Writers of America. When I'm not writing, or watching wildlife from my window, I'm probably reading.
