1.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable--and not in a good way!
I'm definitely in the minority here but I thought this book was readable, after all I did finish it, but it is too stupid for words. I'm definitely in the minority here but I thought this book was readable, after all I did finish it, but it is too stupid for words. First of all, the hero, an Earl mind you, is the heroine's brother-in-law. (His brother is married to her sister.) So he is in the family. Yet he has sex with her, ruins her, all without intending to marry her. Even when other family members find out he says baldly that he's not marrying her. They go off and have their big adventure, danger, intrique, death, and mayhem, have more sex (in which he could have impregnated her as he never took any precautions) and at the end of all that he STILL tells her to go back and marry this other creep she was engaged to, doesn't like, and won't possibly be happy with. (And what was she to tell HIM on their wedding night? Oops, I seem to have lost my virginity some where along the way, you don't mind do you?.) The heroine even tearfully tells the hero she loves him. Too bad, I don't want you, go marry the other guy. As if the other guy would even have her, ruined and all. But that is never mentioned. Stupid.

What a guy right? She's even worse. I actually didn't care if her heart was broken because she was just so irritating. She never did what she was told when they were in danger and usually made things worse. She got snippy and righteous at the most inopportune times. But hey, she could ride a horse for 24 hours straight without breaks. TWICE. As if that could really happen.

She goes home, doesn't marry the other guy, and then pines away from June until the next APRIL. He's gone that long and is back in England for six weeks before finding out she didn't marry the other guy. He just assumed she did what HE told her to do so didn't even bother to check if she was ok, happy, pregnant, nothing.

I can't even talk about this stupid book anymore, it's just too ridiculous!

Alex Scarston, Earl of Selbourne, would rather be back in France, working the front lines of the war as an "intelligence specialist," than stuck in the trappings of London society. Especially when Lucia-pronounced-in-the-Italian-way Dashing stumbles into his path. He hasn't seen his sister-in-law since his brother's marriage five years ago, but the precocious fourteen-year-old he knew has grown into a twenty-year-old temptress. And those dark blue eyes of hers have only grown more alluring. He knows he should stay as far away from her as possible, but when her father asks for his help in locating her missing twin brother he can't convince her to stay out of the way.

Lucia is not about to be left out of the hunt for her brother, no matter where it leads--no matter the scandal she might bring to her father's political aspirations. Even if she winds up talking to women of questionable reputation, climbing into a gentleman's downstairs window in the middle of the night, and trussed up on a fast ship to France. And in Alex's bed. When she does--all of the above--she's determined to follow through. But how can she choose between a safe, scandal-free life with an uninspiring fiancé who can further her father's career and a risky proposition with an "intelligence specialist"--okay, a spy--who causes more waves than he quells? Especially when he's vowed never to tie himself down with romantic entanglements.

When Dashing Met Danger is a thrilling adventure laden with sexual tension from the very first scene, guaranteed to have you up all night asking: Will Lucia find her brother? Will she end the lackluster engagement? And, will she convince Alex that sometimes the most foolish thing of all is letting love slip away?

Regencies have been getting ho-hum of late so this book by galen was a wonderful surprise. The plot was fairly unique.....the characters were full of life........and the dialogue was witty
and endearing. There was more than a fair amount of physical adventure not common to a regency. It's not pulitzer prize stuff but it is a really enjoyable and easy read. Great job SG. Best wishes for continued successes......

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun Regency debut!, July 7, 2005
This review is from: When Dashing Met Danger (Mass Market Paperback)
When Dashing met Danger is an enjoyable book with just the right amount of adventure to keep you turning the pages. The hero and heroine have great chemistry, and debut author Galen makes the secondary characters likeable and interesting. Historical romance readers won't be disappointed in this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Author To Watch!!!, May 2, 2005
This review is from: When Dashing Met Danger (Mass Market Paperback)
Shana Galen is an author that I feel fans of historical romance should add to their "watch and wait" list. This debut effort was highly entertaining and I'm hoping that Ms. Galen lives up to her great start. I'd be happy to visit again with any of the secondary characters and I'd love for her to write the romance of Francesca and Ethan! But first let's talk about Alex and Lucia, these two characters were wonderfully fleshed-out and simply came to life on the pages. Alex and Lucia were wonderfully matched.

Alex is a spy, and Lucia is strong-willed, opinionated, and knows what she wants. Or at least she thinks she does. Than one family meeting later she is paired with her "brother-in-law" Alex, in the search for her missing twin brother John. Of course Alex doesn't need or want the little minx anywhere near his investigation. He can handle it. But what he wants, and what he gets are two very different things. This search will lead these two on an unbelievable journey to both the continent and one into their very own hearts. Will Alex finally realize before its not too late that love does not make a man a fool, but instead makes him stronger than he thought possible?

This was a very good debut effort. Ms. Galen has created a wonderful world filled with fun and interesting characters. She managed to balance her storylines well, not cheating either the romance, or the spy intrigue storyline. I highly recommend this debut effort and suggest that the reading community keep their eyes on this up and coming author.

4.0 out of 5 stars a Regency romp with flair from first time writer Galen, May 11, 2005
This review is from: When Dashing Met Danger (Mass Market Paperback)
There is a lot of new writers out of late, and I am enjoying the fresh voices! Shana Galen is another demonstrating she is a writer to keep an eye on. In her debut novel, Galen has strong tale, with threads of delightful secondary characters promising more in a series.

Set in England in the very early 1800s, Lady Lucia Dashing is manhandled by her drunken fiancé Reginald Dandridge. To the rescue comes dashing...um...well sexy Alexander Scarston, Earl of Selbourne. It's been give years since the earl has seen Lucia, and he is amazed how the week slip of a lass has gone into a sexy woman! Lucia being a sensible and strong-willed woman, insists she is fine, but Alex is adamant that he protect her. Alex is tempted by the adorable Lucia, but he has other fish to fry currently.

Alex is a spy, and he has been asked by Lucia's father to find out what happened to her twin brother John. John has gone a missing. Lucia is determined to find her brother, too, but Alex really doesn't want her interfering or get in his way. What Alex wants has little consequence, when the forceful Alex is determined to say the day. As they work to solve the disappearance of John, they fall in love, but Alex believes he is too old for Lucia. Lucia has other notions!

It's an action packed Regency tale, that keep the reader turning page after page. Galen does sexual tension well, and delivers engaging characters in Lucia and Alex. I will be looking forward to her next book and watching her progress as a rising Regency star.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Dashing Met Danger, January 20, 2006
This review is from: When Dashing Met Danger (Mass Market Paperback)
This was one of my favorite romance reads of the year, and I'm a romance junkie. Great hero/heroine chemistry combined with a lot of excitement and tension. I don't want to give away the plot, but I can guarantee that you'll fall in love with the hero, Alex, and wish you were the heroine, Lucia. Both are very engaging, interesting characters. Highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay read, but not a keeper, January 14, 2010

I thought this book was an alright read for the most part. I liked the sexual tension between Alex and Lucia. The hero tries to deny his feelings for the heroine without much success. I liked that he didn't burst in with a proposal of marriage after their first sexual encounter just because that would have been the right thing to do. It kept me in suspence and made the story a little less predictable. He was known as a rake and that made it a bit more believable that he was, but there wasn't much more rakish behavior other than that. Lucia is very spunky and has had a crush on Alex since she was in her teens. She tries to please her parents by excepting a proposal from a spineless mama's boy, but she can't seem to fight her attraction towards Alex.

Shana Galen's writing is okay but not outstanding. As an avid romance reader for years, I want outstanding! The stortline of Alex being a spy and the two of them trying to find her brother didn't have much to recommend it, but the budding romance of the two kept the book readable for a while.
