This review is from: When Daylight Comes: Biography of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (Quest Book) (Paperback)
This book is about the Founder of the Theosophical Society, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, her life and work. It is a clearing up of the misinformation that has been perpetrated about this amzing woman who gave so much but received so little in return. Those who are ignorant will stoop at nothing to discredit a subject they know nothing about. This biography paints a true picture of Blavatsky, her life and work. Great reading, the book flows all the way through with good style.

4.0 out of 5 stars you'll like it, October 26, 2010

This review is from: When Daylight Comes: Biography of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (Quest Book) (Paperback)
An engaging book, and very worthwhile for those interested in Mme. Blavatsky and the history of Theosophy. Theosophy contains important writings to which even H.H. Dalai Lama has paid some attention. The only other review at this time has little to do with the BOOK itself! The first reviewer found no value in H.P. Blavatsky's views and hence dismissed the work outright. In fact, Howard Murphet, who wrote this book back in 1975, made a commendable effort to clarify his perspective and assumptions, and give us a clear, and chronological, while quite entertaining look at her life, evolution, and aspects of the early history of Theosophy. He also laid clear, at the outset, the range of biases of others. The Introduction starts with a startling contrast between some who considered Mme. Blavaksky a terrible and dishonorable person and others who found her a shining and blameless icon. That is to say, this romantic and controversial figure has inspired many stories. But let us look instead at what she did. Murphet takes us on a journey that tries to keep a middle course, while accenting the account with stories and moments of definite interest. The book does include footnotes and a bibliography. It ends with an Epilog containing an apology by a New York newpaper after HP Blavatsky's death for printing allegations "which appear to have been without solid foundation." The Theosophical Society is an important group which persists to this day with an international following and headquarters in India and Illinois. Mme. Blavatsky played a unique role, and made a major contribution which is helpful to many. Let us stop discussing rumors and look at less controversial parts of her life and history and what was accomplished. Those readers with a true interest in Theosophy and Mme. Blavatsky will find benefit and definite interest in this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars just an ordinary biography, May 14, 2006

It has been almost 100 years since the publication of the book "The Secret Doctrine ". The ideas in this book and quite obscure and none of them has been correctly verified or confirmed

It is neither a popular nor a great book.

Now the author in this book considers H.P. Blavatsky as a saint or super genius. There is a lot of details about her life . But these are only for those who strongly agree with and believe in her teachings - there are not too many.

I am surprised that someone bothers to research into the life of

an obscure person hardly recognised in the world
