Review

When Depression Hurts Your Relationship is an outstanding book, packed with easy-to-read information and strategies that will help couples navigate the stormy waters of depression. Shannon Kolakowski comprehensively tackles how depression negatively roots itself in the bonds of a partnership and offers solutions that are gentle, frank, and straightforward. One of the most wonderful things about Kolakowski’s writing is that she delicately weaves science and research in such a way that it doesn’t overwhelm the reader. Instead, When Depression Hurts Your Relationship empowers, informs, and inspires with hope and encouragement.”
Deborah Serani, PsyD, psychologist and award-winning author of Living with Depression

“Kolakowski has written a wonderfully practical book to help people dealing with depression and struggling to preserve their relationships. She integrates her psychology expertise in very simple and easy-to-follow ways. From attachment to coping styles, Kolakowski addresses the psychological aspects of depression that contribute to hurting a relationship, and offers practical and easy exercises to break away from harmful patterns. The book is a great resource—not only for people dealing with depression in their relationship, but also for any couple wanting to improve their communication style, add mindfulness in the relationship, and gain sexual intimacy. As a professor and psychologist working with couples, I intend to recommend this book to my psychology students and couples as an easy read and addendum to clinical work.”
Dinelia Rosa, PhD, president-elect of the New York State Psychological Association, director of the Dean Hope Center for Educational and Psychological Services at Columbia University, and adjunct associate professor at the clinical psychology program at Teachers College, Columbia University

I have read so many books on depression, I can't even count them. I've suffered from depression and anxiety for 8 years, and have found little solace in therapy or any of those books that I read. I'm in a 3 year relationship that has been tested and tried by my depression, and finally I have found something that really brings home all the things we have been through together as a couple. I had searched forever on the internet to find cases that sounded anything like what we had been going through, but was altogether unsuccessful and began to feel hopeless. But upon finding this book, I finally began to understand the ways in which my depression had begun to control my relationship. It offers immediate solutions to problems that I have been struggling to get my head around for years. Reading the book alone, of course, isn't a fix, you need to be committed to change, and ready and willing to make things happen for yourself, but I cannot stress enough what a relief it was to find this book. I truly felt understood. And it helped my boyfriend to understand what I was going through when I couldn't find the words to describe it to him. I recommend this book to anyone who has suffered from depression and is in a relationship. You would be surprised to learn that many of the problems in your relationship are actually caused by symptoms of depression (from my perspective, at least).

This is a really helpful book - well written and full of concrete tools that anyone can use to strengthen a relationship.

I received this book in a goodreads.com giveaway and I'm very glad I did. I'm always looking for resources to use with my clients and this one caught my attention. I really liked the cover design.

I do think this book sells itself short by marketing itself as a depression and relationship book because the exercises and insights would strengthen any relationship, not just those weakened by depression.

The chapter on Reigniting Your Sexual Desire will be a great help to many clients. The practical suggestions for Managing Painful Emotions were top notch.

I haven't finished the whole book yet, but it's already made a huge difference in helping me and my partner understand the impact my depression has, and how to cope with it together. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to make their relationship work while depression is getting in the way

I have been blessed thus far in my life never to have suffered from depression, but I chose to read this book in support of a friend. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like to examine their emotions and/or improve their communication skills with their partner, not just to those who are also grappling with depression. Dr. Kolakowski gently suggests ways that couples can express their feelings to each other without causing either person to feel personally attacked or ashamed. She points out habits or knee-jerk reactions you can fall into without even realizing it that can have a damaging effect on your relationship, and how to correct them. She stresses the importance of seeing your partner as a teammate, and not as an enemy. She also emphasizes building self-worth by examining what is important to you and challenges you to live a life that prioritizes those core values. Oftentimes, the books in the self-help genre are written with a female audience predominantly in mind, but I thought Dr. Kolakowski did an excellent job in keeping this book gender-neutral by varying her examples and pronouns such that anyone could relate. This is an easy read for anyone, and a must-read for everyone.
