This is an excellent introduction to Josef Skvorecky's work; one glimpses his brilliant humor and heartbreaking honesty in these short stories. One really must read "The Engineer of Human Souls," but if you want to get a sense of his style before diving into a book the length of "The Engineer" this is an great place to start.
