Torchy & exotic...Bravo Jeri Southern!, November 24, 2010
This review is from: When I Fall in Love (Audio CD)
Cool & exotic vocal styling of Jeri Southern is ultimately warm and comforting plus her skill as superb piano player who started on keyboards at five are featured beautifully throughout this gorgeous collection of recordings ranging from late forties through the mid-fifties.
While strolling though the Jazz Room at Amoebia Records in Hollywood, these engaging silky & torchy vocals caught this music lover and ended up leaving with this collection of Jeri Southern performances being a stunning mix of obscure torch songs and known classics.
Jeri Southern had several charted hits in US and in Great Britain her Victor Young orchestrated "When I Fall In Love" featuring her on piano eclipsed popular Doris Day version.
As a piano player of note who backed notables such as Anita O'Day, Jeri composed "Autumn In My Heart" a fine vehicle for her torchy vocalizing where her full & rich voice flows and floats beautifully over a rich orchestration arranged by frequent collaborator Tutti Camarata responsible for a number of stunning performances in this fine collection. Not surprisingly Jeri also worked to great effect with Dave Barbour once married to Peggy Lee and responsible for many of Ms. Lee's early classics...starting with a seductive "The Very Thought Of You", combination of Dave Barbour guitar and Jeri on keyboards is perfection.
Bluesy and soulful "The Man That Got Away" show Jeri can belt it out to great effect when she wants to and Sonny Burke arrangement gives perfect support to her fine vocal.
"Everytime We Say Goodbye" is a perfect end to a brilliantly sung lush oollection of gorgeous performances by a singer who slipped away during a period when great vocalists were sadly overlooked...
Bravo Jeri Southern!!!
