This was the CMA's album of the year!! With good reason; no filler here at all! One thing about Loveless is that she's consistent but she continues to top herself without selling or compromising who she is to "do what sells". Patty is also aware of the need for maintaining her roots and not pretending to be someone she is not. And she doesn't oversell the songs. She's just pure and clean without resorting to vocal gimmickry like (Reba, Hill, McBride, Twain). Patty is vastly underrated as a singer and performer because she is no phony. She's the real thing......and unfortunately, the real thing gets overlooked amid all the glitz, glamour and artificiality of the ones I just mentioned above. "When Fallen Angels Fly" is a true masterpiece...but then Patty Loveless is a true artist!!

For most of my life, I haven't really been into country. My parents both listened to it a little bit, but I never gave it much interest. That is, until last summer when my best friend lent me this CD (and a few others) for a family vacation. I was pretty jaded and didn't think I would even listen to it... but somewhere during the 7-hour drive, I popped in this CD and gave it a listen. I couldn't have been more surprised about how much I fell in love with it. Patty has an AMAZING voice packed with strong emotion, maturity, and pure class. She has no problem delivering anything she sings and always puts her distinct stamp on a song. She's like no other. Every song on this album is wonderful and believable. My favorite tracks are "A Handful of Dust", "When the Fallen Angels Fly", "You Don't Even Know Who I Am", and "Here I Am"

This lady truly is a one of a kind and deserves all the sucess she has gotten over the span of her career. She has finally opened my eyes to real, authentic country music. It's no wonder she has been around so long.

One of the advantages of being a singer instead of a songwriter is that you get to choose your material. When Fallen Angels Fly clearly shows that Patty Loveless has a knack for picking first rate country songs, and the ability to deliver them with fondness and enthusiasm.

Patty covers honky tonk dance numbers (A Handful Of Dust, Halfway Down) and straight-up Rolling Stones boogie (Old Weakness). Yes, there are also those infatuating love songs (When Fallen Angels Fly, Ships).

Patty's signature is the heartbreaker: `You Don't Even Know Who I Am' is about a long relationship between virtual strangers, and love mixes with alcohol in `Here I Am.' The 5-star heartbreaker is "Over My Shoulder.' Heartbreaking is an understatement: Patty pours out enough tears to fill buckets. Instead of importing my country from Canada (yes, I'm speaking of the lady with the bare middrift), I'd rather stick with the good ole U. S. of A. Patty Loveless is homegrown country.

Patty has recorded many excellent albums and this one is well up to her usual standard. It includes three major country hits and seven other wonderful songs. The three hits are You don't even know who I am (about a woman who leaves a man who doesn't understand her), Here I am (about a woman's desire for a particular man) and I try to think about Elvis (an up-tempo song about a woman trying to get over a broken relationship).

Elsewhere, there are plenty of fine songs beginning with Handful of dust, a mid-tempo song with a similar idea to the old sixties pop song, A hundred pounds of clay. Halfway down (another mid-tempo song), When fallen angels fly (an excellent ballad about a happy relationship) and Feeling good about feeling bad (about successfully getting over a broken relationship) are among the other great songs here.

This is Patty at her peak and should satisfy all her fans. While this is a contemporary album, it should appeal to all but the most die-hard traditional fans.

This is one of my favorite albums from Patty Loveless. It's perfect, start to finish. There's a good mixture of fun songs, uptempos, and heartfelt ballads. The album became one of her most successful, and also includes some big hits from her. Patty's voice is beautiful and remarkable. "I Try To Think About Elvis" is fun uptempo country, whereas "Over My Shoulder" is a poignant ballad about letting go and moving on. "You Don't Even Know Who I Am" is a signature song for her, as is "Here I Am". The title track is a nice piece of traditional country. Overall it's a strong album from Patty Loveless, that deserves a place in any CD collection for a country music fan.

Like Patty Loveless albums I have reviewed before, this album "When Fallen Angels Fly" is always right along with those albums. With songs like "I Try To Think About Elvis", a very lyrically different song, it shows that Patty can sing any kind of song, ballad or upbeat, and on the song "Old Weakness", the hidden gem on this album, her voice shines through, a very eerie and mysterious song. "Here I Am" a classic Patty ballad dealing with her demons, showing her falling apart at the seems. "HalfWay Down" is about the only song released that didn't catch my attention, but the song that really put this album over the top was "You Don't Even Know Who I Am", Patty with one of her superballads, a song that really put Patty back on the map. Also the song "Ships" in another winner. This album is a pleasure to listen to and own.

This Album Deserved To Be CMA's Album Of The Year For 1995. Hits Like "I Try To Think About Elvis", "Here I Am", "You Don't Even Know Who I Am", And "Halfway Down" Are The Album. I Have Most Of Patty's Albums Including This One At Home.

Patty has done some great ballads, but on this particular album, she's much better when she keeps things up-tempo. Highlights are the great country-rockers, "Halfway Down" & "I Try to Think About Elvis", along with the harmonica blues of "Feelin' Good About Feelin' Bad" & the piano-driven "Old Weakness".

Perhaps it's just because it's the first Patty CD I bought, but is my definite favorite among all her CD's. The quality is consistently good, and I still come back to it even after 5 years.

Maybe I just missed it, but why they don't mention it was CMA's album of the year is beyond me.

This album is a strong contender for one the best CD's this decade. Patty sounds mature and confident, and proves that as an artist she continues to grow. Well worth your time
