Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-This simple treatise on self-esteem doesn't tell a story per se, but instead serves as a pep talk that connects a number of platitudes: "Somebody loves me just as I am"; "Some things- are hard. But that's OK"; "I feel good when I can help"; etc. The central character is a plump, spunky guinea pig. Her self-assurance and cheerful attitude are winning, and the watercolor-and-pencil illustrations play a large role in keeping the message light. Reminiscent of the immediacy of Jane Dyer's art, they are playful and show, up close, the support of family and friends, indoors and out, and in all seasons. The book could serve as a healthy reminder of the importance of treating oneself and others with respect.

More About the Author

[photo by Matthew Kaplan}
Most of us didn't learn, as children, how to take care of our emotions. Yet this is a crucial part of our learning for life. My books aim to help children (and their parents and caregivers) see that all emotions are important, universal, and can be managed successfully. "When I feel____, I know what to do!"

My children's books also seek to help children who are facing difficult situations such as divorce. It can be comforting to see that one is not alone, and that feelings can be shared. And I try to help children learn that their bodies belong to them, which helps to protect them from sexual abuse.

In December, 2010, my memoir, MISSING, was published, and it, too, is about emotion. My mother (that's her picture, at sixteen, on the cover, and her diary entry) was not helped with her childhood grief. I wish that she, as a child, had had a book that might have helped her. MISSING is about mothers and daughters, and family legacies, and all the ways that people, love, and opportunities for healing are missed--but also about how love and healing do happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for a child perfectionist, February 14, 2005
By
My five year old daughter was having a problem with trying to be a perfectionist. It was making her extremely anxious. This book sends the right message that nobody has to be perfect. As soon as I read this book to her, she loved it and has wanted to take it to bed with her every night. Whenever she wants to read to herself, I see her grab this book. It's hard to find a book for a preschooler that sends this message so that kids can understand it. I think this book would also be good for preschool aged child that does not have a good self-image.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book that reinforces the importance of self-esteem, June 4, 2009
This review is from: When I Feel Good about Myself (Way I Feel) (Paperback)
Therapist Cornelia Maude Spelman has written a wonderful series of books for children, teaching them how to cope with various emotions. In "When I Feel Good About Myself", the focus is on developing self-esteem, as experienced by a young guinea pig. Written as a story, the young guinea pig goes through various situations that make her feel good about herself. There is a brief note to parents by the author at the beginning of the book that explains how it is important to help children feel good about themselves. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful and help make the story real for children.Highly recommended series of books for toddlers and up!

Since I read many good reviews on this book, when I got it myself, I was a little disappointed. I read for my 2-and-half-year-old a few times, then she does not want it any more. She loves books with more "stories".
