Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-This simple treatise on self-esteem doesn't tell a story per se, but instead serves as a pep talk that connects a number of platitudes: "Somebody loves me just as I am"; "Some things- are hard. But that's OK"; "I feel good when I can help"; etc. The central character is a plump, spunky guinea pig. Her self-assurance and cheerful attitude are winning, and the watercolor-and-pencil illustrations play a large role in keeping the message light. Reminiscent of the immediacy of Jane Dyer's art, they are playful and show, up close, the support of family and friends, indoors and out, and in all seasons. The book could serve as a healthy reminder of the importance of treating oneself and others with respect.

More About the Author

Most of us didn't learn, as children, how to take care of our emotions. Yet this is a crucial part of our learning for life. My books aim to help children (and their parents and caregivers) see that all emotions are important, universal, and can be managed successfully. "When I feel____, I know what to do!"

My children's books also seek to help children who are facing difficult situations such as divorce. It can be comforting to see that one is not alone, and that feelings can be shared. And I try to help children learn that their bodies belong to them, which helps to protect them from sexual abuse.

In December, 2010, my memoir, MISSING, was published, and it, too, is about emotion. My mother (that's her picture, at sixteen, on the cover, and her diary entry) was not helped with her childhood grief. I wish that she, as a child, had had a book that might have helped her. MISSING is about mothers and daughters, and family legacies, and all the ways that people, love, and opportunities for healing are missed--but also about how love and healing do happen.

My five year old daughter was having a problem with trying to be a perfectionist. It was making her extremely anxious. This book sends the right message that nobody has to be perfect. As soon as I read this book to her, she loved it and has wanted to take it to bed with her every night. Whenever she wants to read to herself, I see her grab this book. It's hard to find a book for a preschooler that sends this message so that kids can understand it. I think this book would also be good for preschool aged child that does not have a good self-image.

Therapist Cornelia Maude Spelman has written a wonderful series of books for children, teaching them how to cope with various emotions. In "When I Feel Good About Myself", the focus is on developing self-esteem, as experienced by a young guinea pig. Written as a story, the young guinea pig goes through various situations that make her feel good about herself. There is a brief note to parents by the author at the beginning of the book that explains how it is important to help children feel good about themselves. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful and help make the story real for children.Highly recommended series of books for toddlers and up!

We are very impressed with these books. I purchased all of them in the series for my daughter to read to her three-year-old son as issues arrive. They are very well written on a child's level and have good illustrations. They are great reinforcement tools when jealousy, sadness, anger arises, and the When I Feel Good about Myself book is is not braggy but just truthful.

This book is very easy to read, so if you're looking for something that will challenge a 1st or 2nd grader's reading skills then don't buy this book. It's perfect, though, for children of all ages who have some self-esteem issues that need working on (we all go through it sometimes!).

I bought this book for my stepson who is such a perfectionist with his homework, that he cries when he makes mistakes. I've often times tell him that we all make mistakes, and we should always try our best. This book has opened him up to speak more about his issues, and help him understand that there are people who love him no matter what. He always feels better after we read it together.

The book is short and straight to the point, and anyone can relate to the story. And when I say short, you will have no problem reading this every night without begging for the book to end soon (some children's books are just too tedious!).

This series is wonderful at guiding a child through the process of recognizing emotions and understanding what to do with them. We own many from Spelman's series of books.

Cheer on young ones to feel better about themselves. The pages have just enough information for lots of discussion about how different kids are that is fine. We Don't all fit in one little box.
