Cookie Duster is widely described as a side project (or after-project?) of Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning. I liked BSS, but this album from Cookie Duster just blew me away. The first six songs on the album alternate between somewhat subdued, echoey, synth-y songs (e.g., Track 1, "Cut me, Focus") and songs that have just stick in your head and are likely to inspire spontaneous fits of dancing (e.g., track 6, "Standing Alongside Gone"). The fourth track, "Two Feet Stand Up" is particularly pop-y and my guess is that it's the only one that any mainstream radio station would likely play. It's a great tune, for sure, but the rest of the album is just as good, albeit with different qualities. And that's one of the things that makes this album so great: you definitely don't feel like you're listening to one thing over and over. It's a collection of great songs that all go together while remaining distinct. The sounds on all the songs feel carefully sculpted; it's a joy to listen to the perfect timing and beautiful combinations of instruments.

As a side note, I think "Cookie Duster" is probably one of the best band names ever. Sure, other bands might be named after facial hair, but this one takes the cake!
