Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

“Vance Havner used the Word of God like a sword. You pick any one of his books and you could sense the presence and power of the Holy Spirit leaping off those pages.” —Billy Graham

Licensed to preach at the age of twelve and ordained at fifteen, Havner spent a lifetime calling people to repentance. A popular revivalist known for his homespun storytelling and memorable wordplay, Havner boldly proclaimed the Word of God for seventy-three years.

The author of more than thirty books, Havner’s sermons are favorites among pastors who find his style refreshing, his quotes memorable, and his message convincing.  In this collection of ten revival sermons, Havner’s hard-hitting words proclaim the biblical message of heaven, hell, sin, repentance, sacrifice, holiness, prayer, and the lordship of Christ—themes that resonate with as much relevance today as when Havner first preached them.

“Vance Havner . . . is imitated, but he will never be duplicated. I rejoice that we have his ministry available to a new generation that is seeking something more than ‘the average Christian life.’”

—Warren W. Wiersbe

“Havner was a prophet of righteousness and revival. . . . It is encouraging that some of these flaming messages are now available for a modern generation that has never seen true revival.”

—Stephen F. Olford
Founder and Chairman of Olford Ministries

There was no one like Vance Havner. His preaching style was unique, powerful and pointed. He was a master at turning a phrase, using humor to set up a point and then driving the point home like a sharp two edged sword.
Every Christian should read Vance Havner. His sermons are as fresh today as the day when they were written. Dennis Hester has done the Christian community and the church a favor by working to get these sermons in print.
If you love A.W. Tozer, you'll love Vance Havner. He was one of God's gift to the church in the 20th century. His ministry and his preaching needs to be heard in the 21st century. I hope this is the first in a series of books of sermons because Havner had much to say - more than can be contained in one single book.

Excellent book. It was written in typical Vance Havner style, calling men back to God in repentance, and living the Christian life afterwards. Alot like his book, Just A Preacher, down home and writing as though he's talking with people personally. Too bad there aren't more writers like him today, they are needed in this day of entertainment and nonsense pervading the "modern Church". GOOD BOOK.

As a very young man I was first introduced to Vance Havner through the pages of his writings and then in person at a revival meeting.
The late Vance Havner was an original marked by his quick wit, quotable wisdom, and quiet winsomeness.
Dennis J. Hester has graciously introduced the ministry of this man of God to this generation in the pages of When God Breaks Through.

This book has been a Godsend in difficult times. We do not have the "Take it like it is" kind of preaching in this day and age. Vance Havner was like Paul in the New Testament. Not out to make a name for himself, but to preach Jesus Christ and him crucified for out sakes. You just can't say anything in higher praise.

I am only half way through this book, but it has stirred me from the beginning. I heard him preach a few sermons on Moody Radio's Conferenc Echoes and had to read one of his books. He sermons moved me and this book has that energy.
I typically read Puritan writings, the reformers, and such. He doesn't fit quite neetly with that group. But I believe God is working through his words. And I thank God for writers like him.
