4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Salve For the Hurting
The problem of pain. It's a hard topic and it's been tackled by wiser men than he, but Dobson gives it his best shot here and does a surprisingly nice job. 2.0 out of 5 stars No one can answer for God
This book could have been written without critiicising the faithbased ministry. Dobson's use of this made the book less helpful for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Salve For the Hurting, November 11, 2000
The problem of pain. It's a hard topic and it's been tackled by wiser men than he, but Dobson gives it his best shot here and does a surprisingly nice job. This book won't blow away anyone's mind with new philosophical or theological insights, but it does give the average Christian a really good handbook on the subject of suffering. Why bad things do happen to Christians, what the Bible says about this, what the Bible DOESN'T say about it, and where God is in the midst of the suffering and confusion. As Dobson says, it's virtually guaranteed that every Christian will, at one time or another in their life, experience a tragedy that is powerful enough to rock their faith to its core. It is in that time when we need to be assured of what exactly it is that we believe about God, His love, and His promises. This book is a great preparation for that eventuality, and a really good salve for the Christian who currently is wounded and in need of being picked up. Four stars, and a recommendation to those who can't find a copy of Philip Yancey's Disappointment With God.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for anyone struggling with God & life., June 11, 1997
By A Customer
Although I'm not a huge Dobson fan, I think that he really accomplishes a lot with this book. It is very readable and is extremely helpful in getting one to realize that although God doesn't "make sense" all of the time, we are still able to trust him and rely on him as a totally loving & caring God.

One significant point that Dobson makes is that it is unrealistic for us to expect God to answer all of our prayers and make life easy for us. If God answered all Christian's prayers immediately, we Christians would never die, get sick, lose jobs, have cars break down, etc.! Everybody would want to become a Christian just for the benefits! God isn't a sugar daddy who caters to our desires - he is a sovereign God who ALLOWS things to happen to us, usually for our own development & growth

An incredible book that faces tough questions for those of you who believe in Him yet are struggling through a difficult situation with no easy answers. It reaches deep to the heart and allows a heart of sorrow to turn into a heart of courage and trust.

5.0 out of 5 stars I thank God for placing James Dobson in our lives., April 30, 1999
By A Customer
James Dobson has written many wonderful books, but I consider this one to be the best for me. So many things in our lives just don't make sense, but as long as we believe that God is in charge of everything and that all things happen for a reason we will be fine. This book has help me to see myself as a ring laying in the middle of God's hand and all his fingers surround me like shields. Nothing comes through those shields that he does not permit. Now when things get a little rough in my life I just remember, "I'm laying in the middle of God's hand and he's going to protect me." Thank-you

5.0 out of 5 stars God does make sense, August 25, 1999
By A Customer
This book is awesome. We learn that God is in control of our life. Most of the time when we're experiencing difficulties in our life, we begin to questioning Him, whether or not He's there for us. The book taught us that God has a wonderful plan for each of us. Sometimes it doesn't look good if viewed from human perspectives. But He has His own way! Just believe and obey Him, and He will prove us that His plan is the most wonderful thing that will happen to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvelous book for when bad things happen to good people.., April 22, 1997
By A Customer
This is by far the best of Dr Dobson yet. This book helped me keep anchored in God's goodness and promises at a time when my life appeared to have come to a complete halt. Dr Dobson does not patronize anyone, but commiserates how we feel and how easy it is to lose faith in God when things come crashing down. Thank you Dr for such a warm and touching spirit and wonderful book. I recommend this book to anyone who is believing that our Lord has abandoned him when he needs Him most. A definite "10" for believers and nonbelievers alike

My heart was very sore, my mind confused because of so many things happening but as I read the book, I have learned that God is God and in control of everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's all about believing in God... NO MATTER WHAT!, November 13, 1999
By A Customer
This book shows us that certain bad things happen in our lives that makes us wonder and ask the question "WHY?". And this book helps us how to deal with that question, and helps us accept those things and move on. It's point of view for me is that the only reason why "God doesn't make sense" is because we are not God, but only His children. How can we be able to understand someone so omnipotent when we hardly understand each other as human beings. Yet he understands us all and all we can really depend on is our faith in Him as our Creator, as our God, and as our loving Father who is the only one who knows what's best for us, His children.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the most heart warming book that I have read., December 3, 1998
By A Customer
This book is well written and to the point. It sends a strong message of God's love for his people even if and when they are not aware of his love and care. One becomes acutely aware of the complesities of God's thoughts to the point that one has little knowledge and understanding of God's overall plan and how it fits into one everday life. This book makes one painfully aware that God is in charge of this universe and is not, in any fashion, answerable to man as to the whens and whys of his actions. Upon reading this book one will be atuned to the fact that His choices and actions are for the good of man whether his actions and choices are understood or not. If one wants to know more about the personality of God, read this book. Catution: it could change your life.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Encouragement When Life Doesn't Make Sense, February 20, 2007
Whether going through the loss of a job, loved one, divorce, or any other difficult situation, Dobson encourages the reader to keep trusting in God and His goodness when trials come.

The book's chapters are as follows:

1. When God Doesn't Make Sense
2. The Betrayal Barrier
3. God Makes Sense Even When He Doesn't Make Sense
4. Acceptance or Despair
5. He Will Deliver Us, but If Not
6. Questions and Answers
7. The Adversity Principle
8. Faith Must Be Tough
9. The Wages of Sin
10. More Questions and Answers
11. Beyond the Betrayal Barrier

While Dobson does mention that some of our hardships result from our bad choices, he is also quick to add that some of life's trials happen to us because that's just the way life is!

A great encouragement to anyone who is going through difficult struggles and also to help prepare someone before they do go through struggles.

Recommended.
