About the Author
Born as John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco on January 12, 1876, JACK LONDON grew up in a world witnessing the settlement of the last frontier. He was raised by his mother and his stepfather, whose surname, London, he took. Many of the details of London's early life remain speculative, but as an adolescent he adopted the nickname Jack, and at the age of fourteen he quit school to seek adventure.
The last decade of London's life was marked by physical ailments, including a kidney disease of unknown origin. He died at the age of forty of gastrointestinal uremic poisoning, which caused kidney failure on November 22, 1916. Nevertheless, during his short career, he had published more than fifty books, including novels, nonfiction works, and volumes of short stories, as well as hundreds of articles, essays, and reviews.
