Alone Time With Thicke,
By k. lane "jester1436" (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When I Get You Alone (Audio CD)
Who would have thought Alan Thicke would have a son that would have a music career, much less one that opens off with a dirty funk song? Ripping a sample from classical disco instrumental "Fifth Of Beethoven", Robin Thicke has produced a leftfield R&B/Funk tune for his surnamed debut. The only thing that I can think of that has a similar sound is that of Jay Kay and his band Jamiroquai. The single itself could be packaged better, the tracklisting is a bit blah, including an album version, a cleaned up radio edit, and a funky disco instrumental. The song makes up however, as an out of nowhere pop stomper. Good stuff.

Like the title says, why isn't this song on the radio? For all I know, it may very well be on the radio somewhere, but I want to here it on my local top 40 station!!! (whine, whine, whine) Anywho, I love this song! It's classically based (classically sampled) with a funk edge. Thicke's a brilliant songwriter, so give him a chance. I'm salivating...waiting for his album to drop! Hurry up, Thicke!

I Love It!!!,

Robin Thicke's "When I Get You Alone" is one of those songs that makes you wonder why you don't hear it enough. I owned this CD and had loved the song long before I even knew who his father is. Besides, I don't think his father really has any real bearing on his music career because I'm sure Robin would have been out a long time ago if that's all it took.I loved Robin Thicke's use of the disco version Beethoven's Fifth in this song. The lyrics are catchy, the music is funky, and you can't help but get up and dance when it comes on! I think this is an excellent debut from somone who probably won't get a lot of mainstream attention, but will be remembered nonetheless for his incredible musical talents!

Dr. Seaver's Kid Can Sing!,
By
This review is from: When I Get You Alone (Audio CD)
Wow -- this song really blew me away. This kid can sing! But with Gloria Loring and Alan Thicke as parents, I'm not surprised. I love the fact that he took a disco remake of a classical song (Beethoven's 5th -- remade into a disco song and played on Saturday Night Fever's Soundtrack) and sampled it. Pure genius. I've been reading that he has been compared to Jamiroquai -- but I really find his voice a lot stronger and funkier...who knows, you be the judge. Can't wait to hear the rest of his CD...I put it on my Christmas list!!

I love this song, its catchy, with a classical song with a soulful R&B edge. I think its a very good song worth the 1.99, (really I paid .99 but still worth it)

Best Song to Come Out in a While,

I first heard this song when I saw his video on MTV, by the way if you haven't seen the video it is great. The song rocks, I love it. It's upbeat and totally funky, I would definatley reccommend buying this because you wouldn't be disapointed. I only wish that more people knew about Thicke, and that MTV played his video more. I also have to say that I'm disapointed that his record compnay keeps pushing back the release date for his cd. Great song.

Not a gimmick,

Thicke is not a gimmick. Hopefully, he won't be a flash in the pan, either. Talk about blue-eyed soul! His (or the songwriter's) use of Beethoven's Fifth was amazing and so creative. Mistermaxx is the only one so far who gave Thicke a bad review. But he gives pretty much everything a bad review, so don't pay too much attention. This album is funky, sensual, and worth trying out at the very least.

I Like 'Em Thicke!,
By Sergio (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When I Get You Alone (Audio CD)
As an avid fan of ecclectic musicians, I enjoy finding it very difficult to place new artists in certain genres. I wish this were the case with Robin, but he is clearly blue-eyed soul. Unlike my girl Nikka Costa, who always replies with a "WTF is Neo-Soul?" when questioned about her music, Thicke fully embraces that which diversifies him, creating an album that blends the 70's sex appeal of KC and The Sunshine Band (When I Get You Alone) with the timeless soulful ease of Stevie Wonder (Stupid Things). The album stubles with cliched attempts, like the Latin laced "Vengas Conmigo" and "Flex", that I hope won't be released as singles but are good nonetheless. His lyrics are catchy, and backed by that ill production, "A Beautiful World" is a must have.
