When Irish Eyes Are crying is a novel, written in first person, of a 16 year old, All American boy who suffers a severe nervous breakdown due to the genetic mental disorder known commonly as either manic depression or Bipolar affective disorder. Through the eyes of the main character, Archie Mcrae, the reader will gain insight and knowledge about the mental disorder, what it's like to have a breakdown and what it is like to be put in a mental hospital,and what it's like to be stigmatized.
This novel is written in the voice of the 16 year old main character, and there is a substantial amount of humor to counter balance the depth of the subject matter.
