5.0 out of 5 stars when its rush hour all day long, November 27, 2003

This review is from: When It's Rush Hour All Day Long: Finding Peace in a Hurry-Sick World (Paperback)
Rush Hour is very well written and one of the most useful books I have ever read. In a culture that has sold out to the notion that "anything worth doing is worth doing frantically," the author has written in an entertainingly funny style. The book offers very useful helps on finding ways alleviate the stress of overload and busy-ness. It is a must read.

Finding Peace in A Hurry-Sick World

A Review
by Scherry Gilliland

As individuals with multiple roles to play in this microwave generation, who among us has not sought to find a still, quiet place of peace as we hurry through our everyday lives? John W. Tadlock has created a sensible, yet provocative guide to finding that place within ourselves in his book When It's Rush Hour All Day Long. As Tadlock shares his personal struggles with "hurry sickness," the reader is directed to practical guidance for this malady that destroys peace within.

A recovering victim of "hurry sickness" himself, the author inspires the reader through the humorous portrayal of his personal experiences along with his poignant revelations of personal difficulties that resulted from this menacing addiction. Especially moving is Tadlock's emphasis on the importance of Sabbath as rest that God designed to keep our physical, mental, and spiritual clocks in sync. Through his insightful description of Sabbath as not limited to a day in the week but intentionally "carving out sacred time and space" as a means of balance and healing, the reader is guided to believe that there is indeed a way to walk "beside the still waters" in this ever-rushing world.

When It's Rush Hour All Day Long leads the reader to the realization that life is not a race against the sands in the hourglass. Tadlock shows the reader how to resist the urge to continually "fly" in order to keep up with time "flying". He uses his gift with words to help the reader return to basic truths that can be adopted by anyone who truly desires to be healed of living a frenetic life. This is a book that can be referred to time and time again by anyone seeking to find genuine peace in a hurry-sick world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Plain Guide for Getting in Step with God, February 28, 2004

This review is from: When It's Rush Hour All Day Long: Finding Peace in a Hurry-Sick World (Paperback)
My dad he asked me one day about how I was doing. I retorted, "I'm killing myself making a living," and then realized how crazy that sounded. This book calls attention to the craziness of living in our society. Our fast paced efforts to get ahead are really setting us back because the strain of our "instant" lifestyles is disrupting the order of our relationships with ourselves, each other, nature and God. In a plain and easy to understand way, the writer calls attention to examples of the problem and offers straightforward solutions. While reading the book, I found myself recalling the "Habits" of Covey Leadership Training I experienced several years ago. It is a good refresher for continuing one's spiritual pilgrimage. I particularily like the way the writer has drawn on the classics of Christian spirituality. I feel fortunate that I finished the book before Ash Wednesday in that Rev. Tadlock's work offers helpful pointers for making the best of this time of the Christian calendar.
