Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The fifth book in the Jack series brings back the friendly aliens who first appeared in Jack and the Night Visitors (2006). Jack the dog, chained to his doghouse for the night, looks a bit lonely until he notices the tiny, robotic aliens leaving their space car, cavorting about, and unhooking his chain. He joins in their high-spirited play in the sandbox and the pond. When they fly away, they attempt to take Jack with them. From front endpapers to back, each appealing illustration moves the story forward and offers details for children to enjoy. A satisfying wordless picture book. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

* "When Jack is put out for the night, something extraordinary happens. As the pup looks longingly at his family inside the house, out of the sky comes a flying blue car packed with robotlike visitors. These aliens make quick work of turning Jack's doghouse into a play house as they lounge on his blanket, overturn his water dish, and leap from the roof. The real fun begins when they unhook Jack's leash and explore the yard. The pup and his newfound friends dig in the sandbox and swim around in the pond. The night visitors like him so much that they want to take him back with them, but he manages to slip out of his leash before he can be whisked into the sky and is reunited with his young owner. Schories has created another wordless story that is easy to follow and has a timeless quality. The illustrations are full of whimsy, and the joy of both Jack and the visitors is evident as they frolic across the pages. Pair this with Nina Laden's The Night I Followed the Dog (Chronicle, 1994) for a storytime that will have listeners imagining what their own pets may get into when they are not around." --School Library Journal, Starred Review

"Dog lovers and the playful at heart will find this book fun and exciting...All youngsters, but especially your visual learners, will be surprised and delighted by this book." --Library Media Connection

"... [A] follow-up to Schories's previous wordless book Jack and the Night Visitors (2006)...The cheerful illustrations clearly narrate the story, and Jack couldn't be cuter...fun, quirky and easy to follow for pre-readers." --Kirkus Reviews

More About the Author

As a child, my favorite pastimes were playing outside, and when inside, making art. All these years later, my life is much the same. I have created many books for children, and am most well-known as the illustrator of the BISCUIT books written by Alyssa Capucilli and published by HarperCollins. I've also created my own series of wordless picturebooks about a dog named JACK, published by Boyds Mills Press; I'm delighted with the enthusiastic response and good reviews. My newest endeavor brings me back outside to play, illustrating the poetry in "FOREST, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE?" written by Irene O'Garden and published by Holiday House.

I live with my husband Harry, a fiddler, in the beautiful Hudson Valley north of New York City.

I am a new fan of Jack, having recently discovered this series after running across this book. What a charmer! The illustrations here are wonderful. The small aliens that come to play with Jack are hilarious and invite youngsters to just pore over the illustrations so they can see what they are all up to. The story is very evident and moves along nicely. I must admit I was concerned when Jack's alien friends attached his collar to their spaceship to take him home with them. It was with great relief that I turned the page to discover he had slipped out of his collar. Whew! Kids will really enjoy telling this story for themselves and like all good wordless picture books, this one will generate lots of discussion as the story changes with each reading!

The small format also adds to this book's kid appeal. If you haven't already, check out all of Jack's other adventures! A great series.
