This book by a veteran teacher, principal and education consultant offers practical and timely solutions to help parents and teachers intervene before school stress becomes school failure. Included are sample plans for "kindergarten no-shows," "middle-school malingerers," true "school phonics," and "terrible truants." Chapters discuss how to uncover what's behind your child's school stress, strategies to get a reluctant child back to school, fifty fabulous ways to reduce school stress and what to do if your school won't help. The author offers activities that families can do to help raise a confidant and independent child-a child who can handle school stress and challenges with assurance and not anxiety. While writing as an "insider" who has been part of the public school culture for years, Dr. McEwan writes with the compassion and understanding of a parent as well. She encourages parents to be calm, fair, and patient when working with the school to solve a child's school stress. Yet she's not afraid to tell parents how to know when a school is failing and it's time to leave. She packs these 108 pages with warmth, humor and a lot of common sense.
