More About the Author

Brenda Novak Bio

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak's career as a bestselling author--she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.

"When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book," Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times, USA Today and Borders/Waldenbooks bestseller lists and won many awards, including three Rita nominations, the Book Buyer's Best, the Book Seller's Best and the National Reader's Choice Award.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children--three girls and two boys. When she's not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually working on her annual fund-raiser for diabetes research--an online auction held on her Web site (www.brendanovak.com) every May. Brenda has raised over $1.6 million to date.

My Thoughts
When Lightning Strike was a cute, fun read! I'm a big fan on the contemporary romance and that's what I felt this was. I was expected it to be the usually cliché romance, but it was much more than that. The characters are far from perfect and the story takes you through their journey of love, discovery, and what it takes to get back to the person you want to be.
The main characters are Gail and Simon. Gail is responsible, kind, and the owner of her own PR Company. Simon I the movie star her she has just let go as a client because he was too much of a hassle. But when he left her, he took her clients with him, so now she must figure out how to get her clients back and he must figure out a way to gain custody of his son.
After a misunderstanding with one of her employees the only thing they can think of that will help them both is a marriage of convenience. The courts and world will see him as a responsible, one women man, and a marriage to Hollywood A lister will help her grow her client list again. But it's not as easy as it seems. They have to convince the world and most importantly her family!

I loved both of the main characters. Simon is the flawed character that on the surface you want to hate him, but once you get to know his reasoning behind his actions you can't help to love him. Gail is the independent heroine that knows what she wants in life and goes and gets it. But underneath that tough girl exterior she just wants to be loved, and stay wants show her dad that she has made the right decision by being with Simon.

Not only did I love the main characters I loved all the secondary characters as well.

I'm very new to Brenda Novak. The prequel to this series was the first I have read of hers and I really liked it. I really liked this one as well and since it was longer, we were able to know the characters better. I liked both Simon and Gail in this story and felt they had a sense of realism. I usually don't like the whole movie star gets hooked up with the regular girl story, but this one was different. I think since Simon was so messed up, it worked. I know the outcome was predictable, but the journey was so well written. I really had a hard time putting this book down. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I'm ready for the next in the series.

PR executive Gail DeMarco unleashes a world of hurt to her company when she decides to no longer represent Simon O'Neal. The superstar's off screen antics are troublesome and Gail's tired of putting out the publicity fires caused by his drinking and loose morals. What she doesn't count on is having Simon's manager direct the bulk of her clients to a rival PR firm.

With Gail's business about to go under, she must swallow her pride, apologize to Simon and hope he'll be decent enough to stop the hemorrhaging. Just when she thinks she's got the problem neutralized, her enterprising associate takes matters into his own hands and causes yet another firestorm...in the means of a leaked false rape charge against Simon. The only cure seems to be new publicity about a reformed Simon-a sober, moral man enjoying the bliss of a new marriage...to Gail. But can she keep up the pretense of a business arrangement that will terminate in two years without losing her own heart to the man she's secretly lusted after for years?

Simon desperately want to regain the custody of his son and will do whatever it takes to make that happen. But a marriage in name only? Can he control his self-destructive urges long enough to create a new image?

When Lightning Strikes is the first in a new series by acclaimed writer Brenda Novak. Set in California's Gold Country (not far from Novak's home), Whiskey Creek is the embodiment of all that's good about small town life, and it's as far from Los Angeles and as foreign to Simon as a town can be. Never mind that Gail's father and older brother and a host of friends have heard the stories about Simon and are determined to protect her from heartbreak and disappointment as best they can.

WOW, this was a great story, very well told and great writing. First I love books that take place in Hollywood / L.A. and revolve around the movie business, I like reading stories that put you behind the scenes. I also have become quite fond of small town romance books, so was thrilled when this book had the perfect balance of both.

Simon is a A-list, very famous hollywood lead actor with a life being torn apart in the tabloids. Reading Simon's character I actually felt sorry for real life actors & actresses (well some of them) that have had so much drama where the whole world is watching their life go down the drain. Gail is a publicist who use to represent Simon but dropped him as a clint, his manager than destroys the business she has build for the last 10 years. Simon who is trying to clean up his act to get custody of his son agrees to marry Gail for 2 years to clean up his look. Gail is you average plain girl who spend the last 10 years concentrating on building her PR firm and not romance. Gail decides to take Simon to her hometown of Whiskey Creek, where no one cares he is famous they just don't want him to hurt Gail. A good part of the book is watching both Gail & Simon realize that they are not what each expected from each other. Gail sees a different side of Simon when he is out of hollywood and Simon sees how Gail has such a big heart when he use to think of her as the ice queen. These two slowly learn more about themselves and each other in a short time and slowly fall in love when they were not looking for it. Than of course drama strikes and the question is will their love handle the pressures of the press?

This was a great book that kept me entertained the entire time, I had hard time putting it down. I loved the secondary characters of the town and look forward to reading more from the series. I loved the different contrast of both settings. I highly recommend this book. Well worth the money.
