This review is from: When Lights Are Low (Audio CD)
Benny Carter was one of the most versatile musicians of the 20th Century, and this set reflects his musical versatility. From his early recordings with McKinney's Cotton Pickers, to his European big band recordings, to his American recordings under his own name, Benny Carter was seemingly everywhere. This set even includes a handful of Carter's recordings with the famous Oscar Peterson Trio to round out the set of this well-rounded instrumentalist, arranger, and band leader. Carter could do it all, and this set does a good job of portraying that. Like most of the later releases on the ASV/Living Era lable, this set includes exceptionally well-restored transfers of 78rpm records so they can be heard in best available sound quality. While I already owned earlier CD releases of most of this music, I bought this set because I realized this set would have the best available sound to-date. Standout recordings included here are Carter's own compositions (Blues In My Heart, Symphony in Riffs, Okay For Baby) recorded under his own name. This set, like other ASV releases from this period, manages to give you a very accurate musical portrait of this gifted artist. If you want a really balanced look at the work of this great musician, you can't go wrong with this set.
