When The Lion Roars by licenced psychologist and priest of the Diocese of Syracuse Stephen J. Rossetti, is a informed and informative primer to Christian mysticism. Individual chapters aptly address the joy of embracing God's limitless love and is well founded upon the wisdom of scripture, as well as the ideas and commentaries of well-known mystical writers. Very strongly recommended reading for students of Christian mysticism, When the Lion Roars encompasses transformation, self-improvement, and a life lived out of reverence.

Don't be scared off by the title, or the use of the term "mystic." This little book helps to explain experiences many of us go through on our journey with God. It gives us sign posts to follow and informs us of the pitfalls along the way. It took me until about chapter 4 before everything "clicked" so don't give up if you just can't get into it at first. It's well worth the read.

If you have found St. Teresa or St. John of the Cross a little hard going -- this is a most wonderful introduction to these writers. And even if you have read them.......you will still receive great encouragement towards a deeper life with God from this book. Get it!!!

This book was recommended to me when I stumbled into some experiences that are considered "mystical," and what a Godsend it was. I have read the mystical doctors since, and while they are wonderful, this little book is much more direct and straightforward. It is wonderfully done. Anyone who is searching for a deeper prayer life--or have had experiences in prayer that they find difficult to understand--would benefit enormously from this book.

As a student and beginning practitioner of mysticism, I've found many of the traditional books to be obscure and a little daunting. "When the Lion Roars" is clear, accessible and encouraging. I would strongly recommend it as an introductory text for any Christian seeking a more direct relationship with the Divine.

To be a short book of only 158 pages, Fr. Rossetti writes about mysticism in a full and compelling way, defining mysticism and who true mystics are. He writes about undesirable responses to God's grace, warning the faithful to beware of pride and hubris when having a close, mystical experience with God. The book is inspiring and powerful. Read on a Kindle, the highlighting feature was used heavily on almost every page. Highly recommended.
