Review

Laura Landon has written a very heart-warming historical.  And the secondary characters were a delight and I hope to see them get their own stories. Definitely worth the read. --THE ROMANCE STUDIO - Bec

From the Author

The image of Gabriel Talbot on the cover perfectly represents everything I "saw" in my hero: strength, courage, loss and anguish, rugged charm and quick mind. As I wrote WHEN LOVE IS ENOUGH it became clear early on that this was Gabe's story. Yet only a woman of immense heart -- a woman like Lady Lydia Landwell -- could cause a man like Gabe to experience such a depth of emotion when forced to turn from her. Gabe and Liddy are such rich characters that I could literally see them as I wrote. I trust you will experience the same as you read WHEN LOVE IS ENOUGH!

More About the Author

Laura Landon enjoyed ten years as a high school teacher and nine years making sundaes and malts in her very own ice cream shop, but once she penned her first novel, she closed up shop to spend every free minute writing. Now she enjoys creating her very own heroes and heroines, and making sure they find their happily ever after.

A vital member of her rural community, Laura directed the town's Quasquicentennial, organized funding for a recycle center and a physical fitness center, and serves on the hospital foundation board.

Laura lives in the Midwest, surrounded by her family and friends. She has written more than a dozen Victorian historicals, five of which are selling worldwide in English, and one which is currently being reprinted in Japanese. She is a Prairie Muse Platinum and Amazon Montlake author.

I read a lot of historic romances and, hey, they are rarely subtle. But I like them. The characters and dialogue in this one, however, are wooden. The H is so noble and heroic as to be ridiculous. If this were a movie I would say it was overacted but I don't know what to call that in a novel. Tear-jerker perhaps? And, I found the brothers unpleasant. "Selling" their sister without even asking her? I found the writing so off-putting that, somewhere in the second chapter, I started skimming the story just to see what happened. Even then it seemed over the top. And, I wondered, in Britain in the 1830's (when the brothers would have been born) did peers really name their sons Austin and Harrison? I am unlikely to read this author's work again.

I think all three books I have read by Laura Landon are as good and better than most romance novels and since I usually can read most romance novels in a day or two, paying $.99 makes reading so much less painfull. This book in particular held my interest through out and was well done even if a little contrived and very similar in plot to Ms. Landon's other two books. I am thrilled to find an author that I like and one that I can read without breaking my bank. For all romance novel readers, this is a real find.

I was not a big fan of this book. Reading some of the reviews people described the H as a self sacrificing man who put his lovers needs before his. After reading it though I cannot disagree more.

(SPOILERS) The h's father agrees to have the h marry the Marquess of Culbertson in exchange for the payment of all his debt. Because of this, the H then tells the h that he never loved her. He further twists the knife by saying that he was only interested in her if she came with a dowry and since that was no longer the case then he did not want to marry her. I guess what bothered me about this plot was that the H's immediate reaction was to walk away, not to fight for the h. He never tried to find a way for them to be together or find another way; he simply accepted the fate that had been laid out for them. I found nothing heroic about that, him nor her family that was willing to pimp the h in order to get the family debt paid. Of course, it happened all the time during this time period but I find nothing romantic about it. Later in the novel the h asks the H to runaway together and he denies her again after he has taken her virginity. I expected him to say something like, "I like you enough to take your virginity, darling, but not enough to find a way for us to be together, it was great though, thanks."

Even in the end when the H is given the means to pay the debt he was still going to let her marry the other man. That I didn't get at all. The Marquess of Culbertson to me seemed much more of the H. The Marquess is the one who makes the HEA possible by paying the h debt, defying his father and essentially choosing who he was going to marry. I want to end up with that guy, not the looser that just allows life to happen to him. Her H walked away from her way too easily, never really fought for her at all. Her H only lied to her, hurt her and pushed her away. Not my kind of H at all.

I really enjoyed this and Shattered Dreams. Both stories were a bit on the angsty side but that made them a each a sweeter read. This story had enough intrigue outside of the romance to keep it from being too cookie-cutter and the clash between the lovers and their obstacles while a bit cheesy, were believable for the type of story that it is. "When Love is Enough" was a great, feel-good romance and at $.99 I was VERY happy that it was not one of those unsatisfying short stories. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Landon.

This book was commended by a friend & I have her to thank for a pleasant evening with a new author. The book takes place during the Crimean War. The author makes you feel the horrors of war through her well appointed characters. It is a Victorian era novel with a sweet love story with a satisfying ending. The book reminded me a bit of Danielle Steel, but with more substance.
I recommend the book.

I found the story engaging, the characters sympathies and real. This is the second book of Laura Langdon"'s I have read and it won't be the last.
