When Love Turns to Fear, by Alice Ogden,
By Joy Clausen (Flower Mound, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When Love Turns to Fear: Answers from an Abuse Survivor (Paperback)
As the wife and survivor of a horribly abusive husband, I wish I had been taught the "Definitions of Abuse" in high school many years ago. I was raised that a woman should be "totally submissive to her husband", but now I know, that is a very warped interpretation of the Bible. God never meant anyone to be abused, in any way, shape or form. Every young person in junior high shool should be taught the "Definitions of Abuse". How to recognize the traits of an abusive person could be the difference between life or death. Learning those traits are very important! Don't think abuse only happens to stupid women! Believe me, it happens to the most intelligent of us! Abusers are the worst of all con-artists! They lure smart, caring women into helping them and marrying them by skillfully playing the "poor me" routine and promising us the moon. Then, they brainwash us, belittle us, and isolate us from friends and family until we are too scared to report our husband's abusive behavior. Most abusers are respected men in their communities. Wives feel like no one will believe us, because we are treated so wonderfully in front of other people. But, at home, we are threatened to keep quiet and told we are crazy. Some women never get out alive! I was fortunate, but I barely escaped alive. The TV news reports are filled with "abuse turned murder" cases! How many of us have to suffer before we start to learn the traits of an abuser! If you live with or marry an abuser, seek refuge at a woman's shelter immediately! Help and shelter is available! Nothing is worth staying in an abusive relationship!! Nothing!

This review is from: When Love Turns to Fear: Answers from an Abuse Survivor (Paperback)
This book is wonderful and easy to read. It explains in detail the pitfalls of being in abusive relationships and helps identify potentially abusive partners. Great reading for people in need of confirmation and great book for people who know someone in need of help.I need to get several copies.

When Love Turns to Fear: Answers from an Abuse Survivor,

This review is from: When Love Turns to Fear: Answers from an Abuse Survivor (Paperback)
As a former abused victim, the author has very good insight into what happens in an abusive situation. The lists identifying different types of abuse, the personalized questions, and her encouragement for victims to seek help all make this a terrific help. However, it is poorly edited with numerous typos and style inconsistencies which are distracting, so I can't give it a 5-star rating.
It is definitely worth having on hand for those who are being or know someone who is being abused.

This review is from: When Love Turns to Fear: Answers from an Abuse Survivor (Paperback)
This is an easy to read book detailing the pattern of abuse particularly for women; but also applying to men. It features questionaires which help the individual determine if they are in an abusive relationship. This book should be required reading for all young women and their parents.
