When you visit the book store...,
By
This review is from: When a Monster Is Born (Hardcover)
There are two possibilities.
Either you wander aimlessly until you get bored and leave, or something on the shelf strikes you and you stop to take a look. If you get bored and leave, that's that, but if you stop to take a look there are two possibilities. Either you pick it up and start flipping through the pages, or a tiny toddler named Stuart kicks you in the leg and demands you give him the book in your hands. If Stuart kicks you, that's that, but if you start flipping through the pages there are two possibilities. Either the book fails to impress or the book is entitled `When a Monster is Born' and you find yourself gleefully anticipating how your own child is going to react to this gloriously hilarious book. If you're not impressed, that's that, but if the book happens to be `When a Monster is Born' there are two possibilities. Either you decide to wait and bring your child back so he/she can see the book for themselves, or you decide to just buy it because you just KNOW they are going to love it. If you decide to wait, that's that (I mean, what are the chances you'll actually get back out to the store anytime soon?), but if you decide to just bring it home there is really only ONE possibility. You're kid is going to LOVE it! This little book is one of the cutest and funniest children's books I've had the pleasure of reading to my daughter (over and over and over again). The illustrations and the comical plot (and structure) is just a joy. This isn't scary, I mean, even the references to eating people are hilariously used and shouldn't really scare your children. By the time your kids are done reading this they'll be hoping there is a monster under their bed, if only to take him to show and tell!

Three Silly Chicks Review,
This review is from: When a Monster Is Born (Hardcover)
Reviewed by Three Silly Chicks - Readers, Writers, and Reviewers of funny books for kids.
When a monster is born, there are two possibilities-- Either it's a faraway-in-the-forests monster, or it's an under-your-bed monster. If it's a faraway-in-the-forests monster, that's that. But if it's an under-your-bed monster... Well, you'll just have to see for yourself what an under-your-bed-monster does. All kinds of fascinating and silly things can happen when a monster is born. For instance, it can go to school with you, eat your principal, dance the boogie-woogie, or fall in love with a kitchen girl. Yes, readers, those are some of the possibilities in Sean Taylor's new crazy-fun picture book. Each page explores a choice for a monster in modern-day life and then takes it to an absurd extreme. We think this is a brilliant read aloud. Kids will have such fun guessing what that tricky monster will do next! Nick Sharratt cleverly uses a black background to reinforce the monster's more dastardly choices, reinforcing the "good choice, bad choice" theme. Bold, graphic and goofy, this book will bring a smile to little monsters everywhere!

Okay, the kids like it too :) It's cute and has a great story pattern. I like the emphasis on "that's that" and possibilities.

What a great book. The style of storytelling leads the reader through a fun and interesting path that my kids can't get enough of. It is to the point where my 5 year old is making up new adventures for the monster and even giving him alternatives so he can say "That's that!". He's never gotten into a story as much as he has this one. Excellent!

Initially when I read this book I was concerned that my then 4 y.o. daughter (who tends to be a fraidy-cat) would be frightened by it. However she absolutely loved it!
The story essentially goes back and forth between a monster that can be THIS kind of monster (a meaner type) or THIS kind of monster (not mean and somewhat funny type). Each turning of the page offers up a different type of monster it can be. The only scary or violent part is when one of the options is a monster that eats the teacher, but my daughter wasn't scared by that (surprisingly...). In fact this has become one of the favorite books and is on frequent rotation as a before bed story. I recommend this book to those who's kids have begun talking about monsters or being afraid of monsters. For some reason it seems to help mitigate little kids fears (although it isn't a touchy feely warm & friendly type of monster book). It's a fun little story....

There are so many children's books, sad to say it's not often we came across a good one. Once a while, you will find a book not only captures the interest of your little one, but also puts a grin on your face. This is one of those books. My 4-year-old and I love this book, it's clever and funny. As soon as we finish reading it for the first time, my son asked me to read it again.

This is a very cute story and a great way of introduction the idea of choices and consequences to young minds! My boys (3 and 4) ask for this one again and again.

This book was recommended by one of my parenting magazines. It wasn't as good as I expected, given the review, but it is a fun book. The illustrations are great and my 3 (almost 4) year old enjoys reading it.

We love it. That's that.,
This review is from: When a Monster Is Born (Hardcover)
My seven- and three-year-old children and I love this very imaginative book! The format is that there are always two possible scenarios for each situation. If one happens, the consequence is simply, "that's that." If it's the other, "then there are two possibilities." In this case, "When a monster is born, there are two possibilities. Either it's a far away in the forest monster or it's an under your bed monster. If it's a far away in the forest monster, that's that. If it's an under your bed monster, there are two possibilities..." And so on. Lots of giggles are guaranteed and, at least with my children, the story is not over when you close the book.

Storytime Favorite,

As a children's librarian, I have used "When a Monster Is Born" several times for storytime. Kids seem to really respond to the "two possibilities" concept, and I ALWAYS get lots of laughter when I get to the part about the monster falling in love. Teachers or librarians would do well to use this hilarious gem of a book for Halloween or monster themed story hours. It would also make an excellent do it yourself project for kids to create their own outrageous possibilities.
