Book Description

“A heartwarming and amusing romance.” – Library Journal

Graham Spencer needs a wife.

But not just any girl will do. She must have the money to save his dilapidated estate and desperate tenants. So when he meets a charming American lady’s maid on the beach at Brighton, the last thing he ought to do is kiss her.

Katherine Wright is hunting a titled husband.

Or at least her mother is. But Katherine can’t get the memory of a most inappropriate kiss out of her mind. The handsome stranger who took her in his arms in Brighton was only a valet, but even if she is an heiress, she’d rather spend her life with him than some stiff British aristocrat.

Can true love survive two false identities, two scheming mamas, and two lavish house parties where all is revealed? It can …

“It’s said he never smiles. That he is one of the most miserable men in all of Britain and that his heart—if he has one—is the size of a pea.” She held up her thumb and index finger to show just how small his heart was.

Graham, at first horrified, let out a sharp, and rather rusty, laugh. “Do tell me more.”

She smiled, her full lips looking incredibly enticing at the moment, so Graham forced himself to look into her eyes. They were changeable eyes, green and gray and blue in a field of golden brown. “It’s said—I overheard Miss Wright talking with her mother about Lord Avonleigh—that he will marry the very first girl he smiles at. Not a polite smile. A true smile.”

He hadn’t heard that one. “Truly” That’s what they say?”

“That and the part about him not having a heart. He’s known as the Miserable Marquess.”

“He has a heart,” he muttered. “Somewhere.”

“Of course he has one,” she said. “He simply has never used it.”

About the Author: Jane Goodger worked as a journalist for 12 years when she decided to write happy ever after endings rather than what real life can dish out. She wrote When a Lord Needs a Lady as a Happy Valentine’s to her fans. Her next book is titled When a Lady Needs a Lord. The last four books she’s written are loosely tied together with some of the same characters.

Here’s a list of her books. [...]

About the Story: Graham Spencer had to find an heiress and quickly to save his estate and the tenants who depended on him. It was all slowly dying and if he didn’t do something quickly, all would be gone.

The aristocracy in England, in general, needed new blood. English women wanted titled husbands, but not impoverished.

She may be a beautiful American heiress but Katherine Wright is nothing in the eyes of the English society. She truly does not care overmuch about snaring a man with a title but her mother would be very appreciative if she could. The problems begin when the title that she does fall in love with is attached to Graham Spence, Marquess of Avonleigh. Graham is all things unpleasant to the outside world and also about to become engaged. He does not want to marry the woman he is destined to for life but his father left Graham’s entailed estate in such disrepair that this is the destiny he must fulfill.

However, trying to stay level-headed and keep away from Katherine is not as easy task or one Graham seems to be able to do. The romance started out innocently as they played the part of people they were not letting their feelings take they where they would go. Graham could dream of having Katherine in his life and Katherine believed that the romance would bind them forever. But reality being what it is they are cannot pretend to be different or choose other lives and they must accept the inevitable. Neither Katherine nor Graham wanted what would happen next yet when all the dust settled it turned out to be exactly what each of them had been praying for or so they hope.

Jane Goodger has shown her gift for capturing the characters strength as well as their inevitable weakness that makes her story a complete package of life and love.

4.0 out of 5 stars A keeper February 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I was addicted to this book as I read it; it was hard for me to put down. Katherine is an American heiress and she and her mother are in England searching for an eligible, titled lord. While at Brighton Beach, she meets a titled Graham who hides his status from Katherine, as Katherine does the same. They start a brief, yet intense relationship with each other under the guise of a ladies maid and valet. Graham is in need of a wife, and a wealthy on at that. Despite his rapidly growing feelings for Katherine, he realizes they can never have a future. After a few days' time, they part ways only to meet again during a week long house party. It's at this party that they realize the truth of their lies, but despite that, they still have feelings for each other and continue to steal private, passionate kisses. Unfortunately, Katherine's dowry does not provide the funds needed to marry Graham and he must wed another. Will Katherine and Graham have their HEA?

I think Jane Goodger wrote a fantastic book; her pages flowed seamlessly and it was tough finding a place there I could set it aside and continue with being a mom and wife. Usually this kind of book, the kind that I don't want to put it down, leaves me with a "book hangover," however, surprisingly, this one did not. After reading the last page, I started to reflect on what I had read and realized that there were a few things that I would like to have changed. Toward the end, there is a certain situation between Katherine and Graham that changes the dynamic of their relationship. I didn't care for how Graham's personality did a 180. He became cold and almost cruel toward Katherine. If he had simply talked with her and listened to her side of the story, there wouldn't have been such a huge misunderstanding between them.
