Book Description

July 30, 2002
Uma Thornton has always kept the secrets of Madrid, Oklahoma, safe, and until Mitchell Warren's return she's been able to create a peaceful home for herself in this small town where nothing -- it seems -- ever happens. But all that is about to change.

When Uma's safety is shattered by a shadowy murderer who prowls the quiet streets and gardens of this town, she fears Mitchell knows more than he lets on.

Mitchell, a man tormented by his past, claims he wants to protect Uma, but she is not sure she can trust him -- despite her growing attraction to him. Then the series of mysterious deaths escalates, and suspicions turn in his direction. Can Uma trust Mitchell with her life -- and her love -- or is he as dangerous as he seems?

From Library Journal

Except for a visit from Bonnie and Clyde in the 1930s, Madrid is just about the sleepiest place in Oklahoma until a drive-by shooting, the return of a pair of bad-boy brothers, and a crazed killer bent on revenge combine to give the town a jarring wake-up call. While the superb depiction of the small-town environment, unexpected details (e.g., a pet pot-bellied pig), and well-done dual romances add charm to this sexy, occasionally humorous story, a few too many characters complicate an already nicely intricate plot and diminish the intensity of what could have been an incredibly suspenseful story. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable book, and London's fans should be pleased. London has written a number of well-done, sensual, slightly suspenseful love stories; this is her first effort at real romantic suspense.

About the Author

A leading series romance writer, Cait London is a national award-winning bestselling author. She writes articles, is a speaker, and fully enjoys the perks of her career, like meeting readers. Her love of the West is demonstrated in her books. Call's contemporary style involves humor and bringing characters to life by using their pasts and their heritages. "I love digging in genealogy and heritages, and creating them," she says."Really neat characters are born out of immigrant heritages or descendants of Native Americans. The contemporary blend makes fascinating texture."

Of German-Russian descent (with rumors of an Austrian princess in her lineage), Cait grew up in rural Washington State. She is now a resident of Missouri and the mother of three daughters, all taller than she.The best events of her life have always been in threes. Cait London says, "I enjoy creating romantic collisions between dark, brooding heroes and contemporary, strong, active women who know how to manage their lives. Readers are the best perks in this game and I love meeting them. I believe that each of my books is a gift to a reader, a part of me on those pages, and I'm thrilled when readers say, 'That was a good book.'

More About the Author

Cait London is my latest pseudonym; previous was Cait Logan, and I'm thrilled when people remember my other writing persona. After 20+ years in publishing best sellers, I've received awards and have written in almost all of the romance subgenres (series, historical, paranormal, etc.), and a hefty amount of those were in Desires, including the Tallchiefs. More info at my website and blog, an enewsletter is available at caitlondon-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. I'm probably best known for small town secrets, characterization and twists and am a member of several writing groups. I am currently researching new projects/novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could not figure out who the killer was..., August 19, 2002
By
This review is from: When Night Falls (Mass Market Paperback)
Madrid was a small town in Oklahoma. Uma Thornton was known as "The Keeper" of the town's secrets. It was a job that seemed to be passed down by the women of her family. Her life forever changed when her best friend, Lauren Howard, died. Uma, Lauren, Pearl, and Shelly had grown up together. As adults, they still took one night a week for a "girls' night out". Uma would never forget the face of the man who shot Lauren as he drove by * or the feel of Lauren's blood on her hands.

Mitchell Warren's family had been known as the town's troublemakers. As Mitchell and Roman (the younger brother) were teens, someone burned down their home, killing their father. Believing their mother had abandoned them, they left the town far behind. Years later, Mitchell left his high paying job and returned to Madrid. Roman eventually followed. They planned to face their pasts, come what may.

No one of Madrid was happy to see the Warrens return. As the secret keeper, Uma knew more about the Warren family's past than either of the brothers. She planned to help them begin to heal. However, a killer stalked the town. He called himself "Clyde". Lauren had only been the first. Before the last rose petal fell, the other three women would be dead!

***** There is much more going on than I could tell you in the synopsis. In fact, more than one romance blooms in the story. A secondary couple adds more spice and the third girlfriend has husband trouble. Good luck trying to figure out who is behind it all. I had several suspects in mind. I gave up trying to figure it out and just enjoyed the story. I loved it and do not hesitate to recommend it to all. *****

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating and satisfying on both the romance and suspense, January 24, 2003

When Night Falls is packed with secrets, suspense, mysteries, romance and friendships. The story starts with the death and unresolved murder of Lauren Howard and a mystery fire that leads to the death of Fred Warren (father of the Warren brothers), and then turns deeper into the family and romantic relationships of the Warren brothers. It also discloses some old family secrets and memories that both brothers have ignored and refuses to face for years. This is the first book that I read of Cait London's and I find it captivating and satisfying on both the romance and suspense.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, August 20, 2002

I very much enjoyed Cait's move to romantic suspense. The story of the 4 friends flowed smoothly while maintaining the tenseness of the of the mystery and the grief of Lauren's death. There is a unifying theme of 'oneness' that weaves through the story. The promised surprise ending is just that, I never saw it coming.
