I bought the book because of the football history, but also found much more of interest along the way. Well researched and well written - an insightful glimpse into the generation of John Heisman and a formative era in American football.

This is a very fun and quick read for football and Heisman history buffs. There are so many great stories within this book, I couldn't put the book down. Also, the events were put in the context of the history of the time and that made it more entertaining, and dare I say educational. It amazes me how many characters turned out to be famous from that time highlighted in the book. I am related to John Wise who was on the 1892 undefeated team. He played as a guard, so that made the book more personal whenever he was mentioned. To think that he had Heisman as his coach and Clarence Hemingway (who was premed at Oberlin and was the famous author Ernest Hemingway's father)as his team doctor seems like a huge coincidence of historical significance.

Once football was simply sport and not a business. It was in the hands of the coaches and players and they developed a game despite those who couldn't understand it. The game was under fire, much as it today, but unlike today, it was a new game and those who loved the game and had been blessed by it held off the powers who wanted to crush it.
