Book Description

He comes from a dysfunctional home where the brothers were involved with violence and drug use. She comes from a supportive, loving family environment. Both are Mormons. Both served missions for their church. She works in a drug rehab facility as a counselor. He comes to the facility on a court-ordered drug rehab program. It is where they meet: Dino DiLello, the charismatic and natural leader, too often on the wrong side of the law and Misty Squire, the pretty blonde social worker eighteen years his junior, who has a firm commitment to doing what’s right.

Dino and Misty are drawn together in a powerful love that surprises them both. They marry and face a bright and hopeful future. Dino has left his lawless past behind him. Or has he? The night that changes everything brings up troubling questions.

As Misty comes to terms with her worst fears, she must also decide at what cost to pursue the truth behind that night. And somehow she must learn to live with a grief that seems to break her heart beyond all healing.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"What is it that drives us to read through the night? It is real life stories like this, anchored by mystery, grief, religious faith and love. This book is honest, heart-breaking and poignant yet offers the healing power of hope. We are reminded that death ends a mortal life but not a relationship...or a future." --Barbara R. Wheeler, author of When a Spouse Dies: What I Didn't Know About Helping Myself and Others Through Grief

"I highly recommend this memoir to those who have suffered a deep loss or know someone who is currently grief-stricken. Or to anyone who just simply enjoys a good memoir, one that has enough twists of plot to maintain a reader s interest. Whiffs of danger kept me tense with expectation, but at the end I felt peaceful and satisfied." --Ann Carbine Best, bestselling author of In the Mirror: A Memoir of Shattered Secrets

WOW I couldn't put this book down which says it all because I can always put books away. Wonderfully written and if you experienced a great loss in your life you can identify completely with her pain.

2.0 out of 5 stars Strange February 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While I sympathize with the author's loss, and can relate to many of the struggles she went through, I found this story a bit strange. If there truly was foul play regarding her husband's death, then something more should have been done about it. I felt like we were only getting part of the story here, and what we got was confusing. I appreciated how she explained their faith and how it was so much a part of their lives, but then there were so many other parts where she just droned on and on about Dino's past and mentioned so many names that it was hard to keep track of them. Suffice it to say that I have read much better memoirs than this one. And better written ones.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't finish this book April 20, 2013
By Joki
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had high hopes for this book, but it just didn't keep me interested enough to continue. Reading gets too tiresome when EVERYTHING goes wrong for the author--I just got slogged down in all the crap in her life. Somehow it didn't add to the story, just made me depressed and not see any hope on the horizon.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disjointed February 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The story was a little hard to follow because the author kept jumping from one time period to another. I also felt she could have gone into more detail about their early relationship. I don't usually care for stories that start with the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Emotionally Powerful Memoir July 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In this beautifully written emotional memoir of love and loss, Ms. Covington generously shares her emotions at the loss of her husband with whom she shared her life and love for only a few brief years on earth. She is grief stricken that she wasn't by his side when he died, and desperately wants to be with him, to have him communicate with her from the "other side." She doesn't know how she can live without him. Then, she discovers that something isn't quite "right" about the way he died, and his death begins to haunt her waking moments and sometimes her long dark nights.

The author's generous and excellent use of dialogue moves the story forward. But what most impresses me is her skill with description. She eloquently and vividly portrays her turmoil and inner struggles as she tries to comes to personal terms with her loss while attempting to uncover the truth of her husband's death.

Using skillful flashbacks that are often in dialogue, we get glimpses of Dino, the man she married, "the charismatic and natural leader" who was "often on the wrong side of the law" but had since "repented" by the time she married him.

Upon his death, she begins plodding step by step toward a future life without her beloved Dino beside her, in reality not an easy thing to do as I know from my own life of many personal losses. I empathize with her pain and struggle, and in the end experience a catharsis that I'm certain she also experienced in her writing.

I like suspense, and this memoir is filled with a credible and satisfying tension that compelled me to keep turning the pages. I especially enjoyed reading the paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring June 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Only the best literature will stay with you, and this book did that for me. Ever since I read this book I cannot stop thinking about Misty and Dino. It will make you cry, but it will also lift you up. It is a story of grief, but it is filled with spiritual insights. Dino's death is a mystery, but somehow Misty has the strength to move on, and be content with unanswered questions.
It is this kind of strength that I envy, and when I feel weak, I think of Misty and her love for Dino.
