Book Description

4 and upP and up
Owen’s mom is usually pretty frantic in the morning because of all she has to do before going to work. Owen finds he can block her out with his dragon head on. But one morning Owen wakes up and discovers that his mom has turned into a dragon. What’s even worse is that she can’t remember how to do mom stuff – like make breakfast and wash dishes. Instead she eats bugs and breathes fire. What is he to do with her?

Lively, whimsical illustrations accompany this droll child’s-eye view of when life gets really, really hectic for a parent.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–When Owens harried, grumpy mom suddenly wakes up as a dragon, he is initially pleased. Soon, however, he discovers that she has forgotten how a mother behaves. When she licks the dishes clean and puts the cornflakes away on the toilet seat, her son decides hed better take her to the doctor to see if she can be cured. The trip turns into a mini-epic adventure as Mom is mistaken for an escaped crocodile at the zoo; scares the little boys at the playground; and, to her delight and the hysteria of passersby, discovers that she can breathe fire. When the doctor cant provide any remedy, Owen turns to his grandmother for help, and she reassures him that everything will be all right in a few days. Sure enough, the next morning, a decidedly less frazzled and perfectly normal and smiling Mom greets Owen. Lindenbaums watercolor-and ink-illustrations and use of playful angles and perspectives give the art a sprightly, kinetic energy. The pink dragon with the moms topknot of hair is hilarious, and the humor will appeal to children. Owens resourcefulness in light of his mothers transformation will delight young readers, who will recognize a child coping with a parents very bad day.–Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird and wonderful, November 7, 2007
This review is from: When Owen's Mom Breathed Fire (Hardcover)
When Owen's Mom Breathed Fire is a Swedish translated delight. We meet Owen and his single mom in their kitchen one morning as Owen's mother is frantically and loudly trying to get both she and Owen out the door to their respective places. To cope, Owen briefly escapes into the quiet of his big rubber dragon mask. The next morning Owen finds not his familiar mom, but his mom as a dragon who apparently does not know the first thing about being a mom. She lets him have chocolate everything for breakfast. She cleans the plates by licking them. She quiets her cell phone by stomping on it. Although it starts out to be a pretty fun day for Owen, who gets a little sidetracked by the zoo and the park on his way to take his mom to the doctor, his mom-as-a-dragon becomes a bit of a handful especially when she discovers she LOVES to breath fire. Weird, funny, sweet and reassuring, this book is a must have for its wonderful artwork, humor and alternative sensibility.

My son who is 7 and I love this book. He's an Owen, too. =) I don't like it when a "bad word" comes up once in the story. I think it's stupid if I remember right. But I just don't say the word and since my son is still a beginning reader he hasn't picked up on it yet. Funny story that still leaves me guessing in the end... what really did happen to Bea? =)
