Book Description

This new edition of When Parents Die will speak to bereaved children of all ages in a very accessible style. Rebecca Abrams draws on both her personal and professional understanding of parental loss to provide the reader with a compassionate and insightful exploration of the experience of losing a parent.

When Parents Die has already established itself as an indispensable aid both to the bereaved seeking some understanding of their loss and to the many professionals who work with them. This new edition takes into account new research and theories and considers in more depth:

*the continuing importance of the dead parent in ones life
*the critical role played by the surviving parent
*the experiences of younger children
*the impact of divorce and adoption.

Retaining its clear, direct and sympathetic style, this text will continue to appeal to the bereaved, their friends and family, counsellors, social workers, doctors, nurses and teachers.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Rebecca Abrams' book makes an admirable and long overdue contribution to the literature on bereavement and the care of the bereaved. ... The book is eminently readable, being so well illustrated by case material, including the author's own experience. Yet this is also a book of substance, resting on well-attested theory, particularly attachment theory, and rooted in common sence.' - Sue Waldron-Skinner, Crucible

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed to read..., August 10, 2004
This review is from: When Parents Die: Learning to Live with the Loss of a Parent (Paperback)
I found this book extremely helpful following the death of my mother when I was 21. Rebecca Abrams has herself lost a parent and a step-parent, and draws extensively on her personal experiences. This book really fills a gap; there is very little written for young adults grieving the loss of a parent. I highly recommend this book for anyone dealing with a parent's death, or anyone supporting a bereaved child.

I wouldn't normally search out these kinds of books but my mother brought it home for me from the library. This book is very helpful and filled with useful affirmations especially for young adults like myself.
