When will others follow suit?,

This review is from: When a Pope Asks Forgiveness (Paperback)
Many Catholic Cardinals opposed Pope John Paul II's decission to admit error on the part of the Church and many of its leaders and seek forgiveness. The Pope did so anyway. He appologizes to various races and religions. Pages 157-164 held my interest as he appologized for the Church's wrongs towards Native Americans (Indians). The only fault is with the author's claim that Poland alone has never done wrong to another nation or race of people. Sorry, Poland as with all other peoples have thier share of biases against other peoples and races. The author's attempt to cover up for the Pope was unwarranted. I believe John Paul II would never have made such a claime.
It is well past time for Church Leaders in America to do as John Paul II did.

Excellent and much needed book,
This review is from: When a Pope Asks Forgiveness (Paperback)
Accattoli provides an exceptional look at one of the chief themes of Pope John Paul II's pontificate: repentance for past mistakes, both of the Church and all individuals who claim to follow Christ, along with the dignity and sanctity of all human life. Even these two themes are intertwined, as may be seen in his encyclical, Evangelium Vitae. Accatoli's overall look at the late Holy Father's writings and speeches is impressive and a good read. Faith in Christ requires such an examination of conscience, even of the Church, from time to time in order that our commitment to Him may be renewed and be more vigorous than ever. This book provides such an examination, and though not a historical text per se, it is an excellent source for historical commentary on the more unpleasant episodes in Church history.

The topic of this book is of utmost importance. These events will go down as the most significant events in modern church history. This book belongs in all libraries.
