Book Description

May 4, 2012
When Quietness Came is the true story of a young woman studying neuroscience who, in her final undergraduate year, has a psychotic break, attempts suicide and ends up in hospital. Her struggles to get well and to pursue her PhD are described in this book. Her story is geared to people from a variety of backgrounds. As a neuroscientist, Erin reaches out to the medical community who need to hear this side of the patient. As a schizophrenic, she reaches out to others struggling with this disorder, hoping to draw alongside and offer empathy and hope. Finally, she wants the general public, family and friends of people with schizophrenia to be better able to understand and sympathize with those afflicted.

5.0 out of 5 stars fascinating memoir June 12, 2012
Format:Paperback
Erin Hawkes started to hear voices at a young age. Didn't everyone hear them? At least that was her belief. When Quietness Came: A Neuroscientist's Personal Journey With Schizophrenia reveals her struggle with auditory hallucinations and delusions. Despite her long battle, she was an academic star, earning a Master's degree in neuroscience, scholarships and the Hugh Bell award.

I feel Erin is courageous and should be applauded for sharing her story. In her memoir, she can shift from neuroscience expert to describing delusions in less than a page. This book also shows that one can be highly intelligent but still succumb to paranoid delusions. She writes about self-harm and being put in restraints and injected with medications against her will. The revolving door of repeated relapses and hospitalizations is a reality for many people suffering from mental illness. Erin's story is remarkable that she could achieve so much despite her illness.

I was so wrapped up in this book that I read it in less than a day.

This vividly written new memoir plunges us into the painful experiences of psychosis. Erin's long journey to learn to manage the symptoms of schizophrenia is an eye opener not only about the challenges of living with such a difficult brain disorder. It also shows us how much goes wrong in the mental health system in Canada both within and outside of hospital care. This should be required reading for all psychiatry residents, psych nursing students, and other mental health professionals who want to improve the experiences we offer to people in the throes of severe mental illnesses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good June 8, 2013

Showed intelligence alone is not enough to conquer schizophrenia. there is nothing to be ashamed of with mental illness. Given a choice people would not ask for these kinds of problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always Happy April 25, 2013

Very good for anyone haveing a friend or relative suffering from this Illness. I found the insight very helpful. Only thing I found was
the repeated explanations of the entry into the Hospital for treatment, and the aggressive actions of the Hospitlal Staff and Security was over expressed. Once or twice would have been enough. Repeating the entry process and treatment too much
and too frequent in the books dialog was in my mind a little overdone. Still for those in the dark this is the best explanation of BiPolar and similar illnesses around.

Hawkes shares her knowledge and experience of living with schizophrenia. What I like is that I felt that the author was honest and insightful in talking about her experiences and was seemingly quite objective. A pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Inside" look at schizophrenia September 4, 2012

Hawkes writes an intimate narrative of the development of schizophrenia from the earliest days of its onset through at least ten years. She makes very clear the progress of each psychotic break and what was going on in HER mind as it happened--very revealing for anyone living with someone slipping into schizophrenia. She also includes observations of more lucid perceptions and writing--she writes well. I've recommended this book to friends in NAMI who have afflicted schizophrenic relatives, and they have found it very helpful to enable them to see more clearly what their loved one copes with.
