Kindergarten-Grade 3-- The plot of this lovely picture book is slight: Leila and her father, out picking blackberries for a pie, are caught in the rain. They run home and, when the rain is over, go back to gathering berries. On the last page, Leila is rolling out pie dough, with her father in the background. The sights, sounds, and scents of a rainy day in the country are portrayed in an understated way that is a happy blending of words and pictures. The author's voice has a seemingly artless air that gently points out the magic that can be found in everyday moments. A love of the countryside and the animals that live there is evident in both text and illustration. Sorensen's paintings have soft edges and muted but rich colors. He uses light gracefully and effectively, and the feelings evoked are those of harmony and peacefulness. While this is not an exciting or dramatic story, it takes a sensitive look at the natural world and some of its more subtle beauties.
