5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Helpful, December 10, 2008

This review is from: When Reality Hits: What Employers Want Recent College Graduates To Know (Hardcover)
[[ASIN:1933285877 When Reality Hits: What Employers Want Recent College Graduates To Know]
]What a gift for that graduating senior: "When Reality Hits" by Nancy Barry. Yes, better even than a Piaget Polo watch. This book could help that grad be such a success he or she could acquire a dozen of those
Piagets and drive them around in a Jaguar XK.

Nancy Barry is right on target as to what the soon-to-be graduate and recent graduate should know and be sensitive to - and practice in the business world or professional world - or any world.

It's a perfect text for internship programs. For senior seminar classes and similar courses. It is pragmatic with an underlying theme of being politically savvy in your career and above all ethically savvy and a
practitioner of same.

It is so beautifully written. Conversational. Crisp. No wasted words. Direct. Interesting. Easy reading.
Loaded with that practical advice that every new graduate (and those long-time graduates) so desperately need to succeed in an increasingly highly competitive world. Simply stated: "Totally helpful." Jack Raskopf. professor emeritus, Texas Christian University Schieffer School of Journalism

Barry's book is not only spot on, but timlier than ever! This is a must read for recent grads and companies seeking to understand the enigmatic Gen-Y and Millennial generations. If you manage young people in your business, this is the definitive book for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Parents - tell your adult son to put down the Wii/PlayStation and read this book!, January 9, 2009
This review is from: When Reality Hits: What Employers Want Recent College Graduates To Know (Hardcover)
If you think that your education stops with a college degree, you're wrong. Nancy Barry does a great job of educating especially the college-aged student that there is still much more to learn in life - and these "soft skills" aren't in some text book, but you will be tested on them and your grade in how well you communicate and get along with people will most likely determine how far you go in life. This is basically the premise of Barry's book - a no-nonsense, practical guide to etiquette, manners and plain old common sense that this younger generation clearly is lacking. With their iPods, baggy jeans, shaggy hair and lack of enthusiasm, Gen Y's "SuperNanny" of the boardroom is Nancy Barry telling it like it is and giving guidelines on how to dress appropriately, how to make a good and lasting impression, how to move up the corporate ladder, and how to be happy along the way! Great gift book to give to new recruits fresh out of college in your business or really to any young person you care about that obviously doesn't care enough about themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Working With the Wonderful Gen Y Generation, March 9, 2008
If you know a Gen Y'er who is in your house or in your business....BOTH of you need to read this book! This generation has been stereotyped as lazy, disinterested, unmotivated and it could not be further from the truth. They are different....but so were the Baby Boomers and the generations before them! Nancy Barry provides great insight as to what makes Gen Y tick and how they think which is extremely valuable in helping all of us to understand one another and work together. Gen Y will change our world....and if you pay attention to Nancy you will understand how they will change it for the better....you want to be a part of this!

This review is from: When Reality Hits: What Employers Want Recent College Graduates To Know (Hardcover)
My daughter attended a seminar by Nancy at Texas A&M, Mays Business School on March 19, 2008.

She told me, "Dad, everything she said is what YOU told me!"

Swelling up with pride I told her that Nancy learned everything from me.

Not.

But I am gonna buy the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for Gen Y, September 22, 2009
This review is from: When Reality Hits: What Employers Want Recent College Graduates To Know (Hardcover)
This book is an easy read, and very funny in places. I shared with my managers so they could see where supervisors might be missing the boat. Not just good advice for Gen Y but also for every employee and supervisor.
