3.0 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING
I was so glad this when this cd came out. I was finally able to listen to the "mature" David Cassidy albums released on the RCA label in the 70's. My humble opinion? Only ok. Sounds very dated some years later. Still, there are some good songs to be found. "Common Theif", "Get It Up For Love" is excellent, and "Tomorrow". Fans should check this out.

Only the most steadfast fans of The Partridge Family and early David Cassidy solo career followed him into a somewhat darker period ending with these 3 albums. Afterwards, David himself left music for a time. It has been said that it was the fans who "grew up" and left. Perhaps, but I believe it was a combination of things; Poor handling and writing of the Keith Partridge Character - especially as his popularity grew, also the fact that David himself continued to walk further away from his fan BASE, and yes, his fans DID grow up - so we were both headed in opposite directions. That combination brought record sales to a snails pace - to the point where the 3rd LP never surfaced at all in the US. These efforts did bring some critical acclaim - but at what cost?. That said, this CD offers a rare glimpse into David Cassidy himself as he was given more discretion than every before to define himself musically. There are some nice pieces here with the group America's influence and backing vocals on several cuts; Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell (sans Dan Peek). Also some nice Beach Boy influence, among them "Darlin' " and the refreshing and upbeat tune "January" with Bruce Johnston on background vocals. Cassidy friend Bill House brings collaborative song writing and background vocals (he goes way back) too and in particular his own tune "Common Thief" which comes off nice after "Massacre on Park Bench" -- which you only get the final line here. (now THAT was dark - and "self loathing"). Dan Campbell

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic! Highly underrated work., June 29, 1998

This review is from: When I'm a Rock N Roll Star: Collection (Audio CD)
I was so amazed and moved by this CD, that I searched for and found the 3 RCA records from which this CD is compiled, just to hear the other tracks which were not on the CD. He is such an underappriciated talent, it's a shame he's been pidgeon-holed as a bubblegum singer. I was blown away by the rich arrangements and harmonies, quality of songwriting and depth of feeling. Anyone who likes good, melodic ROCK should give this one a try. I bought it, having never heard any of the tracks, just out of curiosity. Boy, am I glad I did! This is now one of my favorite CDs. Just think, if I hadn't bought this CD, I would have never heard this wonderful music. The Moral Of This Story: Don't depend on radio or MTV to show you what good music is. You must search and search until you find it. David is now one of my all-time favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars staying power,, May 17, 1999

david cassidy has been aroud because he can sing, very simple' the rca records I think are two of his best and I like all of his records but I m his biggest fan and I m proud of it . His music has made me feel good for many years and thats what it is all about , feeling good and his music will do that for you. its that simple. If you ever saw him in Blood Brothers' you would know that he is a realy good singer, that was when I saw just how much he was a true singer and not a bubble gum person like they say. Listen to his songs and feel good that s what life is about . tony

5.0 out of 5 stars why can't people hear how great he is?, May 12, 2002

I bought the original albums to this cd when they came out in the 70's (at least the first two). I loved 'em then and I love 'em now! I wish the entire 3 record set could be available 'cause they left out some great music! "This Could Be The Night" and "Love In Bloom" among the ones that come to mind. David never sounded better in my opinion. It ticks me off that David has never been given the recognition he deserves. I would recommend this album to anyone and that includes the music critics that think David has no talent. Keep making the great music David! You still have plenty of fans to buy all the albums you can make!!!

I have owned this recording since the release date, and i agree it is a cd never to be without.Although i still like his pop stuff that hit the UK in the early to middle 70's this just shows what talent as a warm tunefull singer he is,only one problem, arista where is the "dreams are nuthin'more than wishes" album going to get released? that also was a good un.

5.0 out of 5 stars David Cassidy: The RCA Years, March 14, 2005
This review is from: When I'm a Rock N Roll Star: Collection (Audio CD)
Jaded with his squeaky clean Partridge image by the mid seventies, Cassidy jumped ship from his failing Partridge Family Bell label, later helmed by Arista Records and signed with RCA. Although many of his teenybopper fans grew up and moved on, his steadfast fanbase snapped up his solo material with equal fervour despite the Powers That Be that decided that Cassidy was long over. Shunned by the USA, Cassidy had continued success in the UK and Japan and his later LPs noteably "Gettin' It In The Streets" received only limited release here on vinyl and was hard to find. Now, decades later New York based Razor & Tie released a best of RCA years sampler that includes standout performances: "Get It Up For LOve", "January", "Darlin'", "When I'm A Rock 'n' Roll Star", "Common Thief", "On Fire" & "Tomorrow". Although some great tunes are absent, this selection was carefully prepared and a "Must Have" for fans who missed these great LPs the first time around. Includes great tunes from the following RCA vinyl, neatly remastered: "The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall", "Home Is Where The Heart Is" and "Gettin' It In The Streets". Reasonably priced compliation that proves that Cassidy successfully transcends his Partridge years! Worth the price!

I got this cd because I like David it seems like forever. His voice is so deep and it just makes you think of romantic things especially when he hits the low chords in the songs he just seems to be there singing to you only. And it like has you in a spell. I would recommend this cd as a keeper!
