I have read this book at least 3 times because it's a fascinating, beautifully told story of life and familial relationships in the Carribbean culture. It is a very unique story about a special daughter, the first of her mother's children to live. It is a clash of the old and the new (newer, anyway) ways of the time. Fascinating, mystical, touching story. My favorite Nunez book. Everyone I recommended this book to enjoyed it. Great book club candidate.
