Editorial Reviews

Review

''In a short, highly readable book, Noddings debunks many myths about standards, testing and accountability. Noddings' level-headed call for the repeal of NCLB and her proposals for fundamental revisions of NCLB if a repeal is impossible, are timely as public debate around the NCLB reauthorization heats up.'' --Rethinking Schools

Clear writing and thinking by one of America's most caring educators. A must read for anyone who cares about our troubled public system of education. --David C. Berliner, Regents' Professor of Education, Mary Lou Fulton College of Education, Arizona State University

If you only have time to read one book, make it this one. Logical, lucid, wry, and wise, the book brings Noddings s vast experience to bear on what's wrong about current and recent efforts at school reform and what appropriate, humane reform might look like. --Gerald Bracey, Independent researcher and writer

It's true and points out what many practicing teachers already know - government doesn't know best. Schools do need to reform, but we need to be smart about it. No more reform or programs du jour. Real reforms need to be made by practicing teachers not educrats in the government that say that since they were once students, they can teach. That's like a patient saying since they've been in a doctor's office, they can practice medicine.
While the book gives us little we already knew, it does give us a voice saying it.

Noddings writes a lucid, stirring, and emboldened critique of No Child Left Behind. Every educator should read this short text.
